Out of interest and slightly OT - how many of you people get up in arms when your patron saint isnt celebrated as much as say the paddys? Those of you who do should then be proud that we have the opporunity to show of our green and pleasant land to the world for once and maybe put right any negatives countries around the world have of us.
I don't think that comment is OT, in fact I think it's bang on topic!
I really don't get why we can't just get behind the whole thing and show just a little bit of national pride for once0 -
i think its a good thing and the financial rewards will outweigh the spending plus it will get the uk prestige and its the only time youll see it in a lifetimeReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0

Its only for Londoners anyway no one else will benefit
Benefit?
Like many Londoners, I pay for my travel upfront using a travelcard, as the PAYG cost of getting the tube every weekday is far too expensive when you're a regular commuter.
TfL's glorious plan for dealing with the increased travelling during the Olympics is to tell people like me not to use the tube. By the time the Olympics comes, I will have paid for unlimited travel in central London, yet I will be told not to use this service for which I have paid. I cannot tell you how much this infuriates me - if TfL want me to avoid using the tube during the Olympics, they should issue me with a prorated refund for the duration.
The other main alternative being suggested by TfL is to take annual leave. I don't want to go away during the summer and certainly not for weeks at the time. It's better for me personally and the business professionally if I take off smaller chunks of time spread over the whole year. My holidays are between me and my employer - they're nothing to do with TfL.
Cycling has also been proposed - apart from the fact that I have no sense of balance, that my workplace has no shower facilities and I live too far away from my workplace to make cycling feasible, I would never recommend cycling in London to anyone. The streets are so crowded that it's far too dangerous. I know of people who have been knocked off and killed through no fault of their own - you couldn't pay me to cycle in London and in fact, TfL aren't offering to pay me, they're offering to take money away from me for no service in exchange.
If I dare to flout TfL advice and try travelling to work, not only do I have the tourists to contend with, but chances are the tube staff will go on strike. The Unions have threatened it and are not showing any signs of backing down. They may not be striking directly due to the Olympics, but they wouldn't be timing their threats in this way if the Olympics weren't taking place.
As far as I'm concerned, the Olympics is a giant waste of money that's going to cause a horrendous amount of disruption to Londoners. We're not going to benefit from it the most, we're going to badly impacted by it the most.
Rant over! (Not directed at you, deanos, promise, but the Olympics does wind me up something rotten.)0 -

What do people expect? In the 70s when the IOC was skint as bumholes, they had to do something drastic to stop the games going down the pan. The way forward was sponsorship, sponsorship, sponsorship. Part of that is the endless advertising space that sponsors are given in the run up to and during the games themselves.
TBH, I think people are being a bit churlish. It's 64 years since we last had the Olympics and will probably be another 64 until we have them again. Can't people cope with it just for a few months?? If you don't like adverts, watch BBC. If you don't like the olympics themselves, watch ITV!"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I have no interest in it either!Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670

I live in West Sussex and if I could afford to I would go abroad during the Olympic games it would be a safer place!
I cannot think of anything else more likely to draw attention to Britain and its potential target for terrorists and riots than the Olympic Games in Britain ! Its trouble waiting to happen especialy since the riots in London earlier this year and the gang cultures in that area. It will be a drain on the resources and crime will increase in areas they have drawn police and other emergency service forces from.
I cant wait for it to be over. Then again I have hardly heared anything about it as its been all about the Titanic 100 so far.Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
If its important to you, you'll find a way - if not, you'll find an excuse ! ~ Easy to say when you take money out of the equation!

Well - I'm not particularly interested and given that I drive past one venue to work within a couple of miles of Stratford _ I'm going to be seriously glad when it finishes...
However, the thing that annoys me about the ads is the incredibly loose association some of these sponsoring companies have. I understand a trainer company paying megabucks for the link; I understand Holiday Inn running the accommodation. But Proctor & Gamble? Official washing-up liquid of the Olympics - that's a reason to choose theirs over someone else's? John Lewis - official dept store of the Olympics. Bet they don't stop selling Nike, Pepsi, Panasonic products though...I need to think of something new here...0 -

So we shouldn't do things like the Olympics because of the risk of terrorism? Really?0
