Could possibly be a homeless person? back seat of a car is a pretty decent option compared to a cardboard box behind some bins. Perhaps they had a rummage for some food/sweets but were decent enough to leave the satnav?

Can't remember where i read recently about someone who got in their car and found a tesco bag on the passenger seat which seemed strange, turned around and there was a random homeless guy sleeping in the back. They asked the guy to leave and he did, no harm done.

My first ever car was a 1981 Ford Fiesta.

I once left it unlocked in the roughest part of town and went to a shop. At the time, theft of car stereo's was rife.

I came out to find a letter on my dashboard. It was from a thief, basically saying he was a car thief and I should remember to lock my car in future as my stereo was well worth taking as were my speakers... it said he was in a rush, so next time I won't be so lucky!!

Nowt had been touched. Even my fags were left on the drivers seat.

I don't reckon I've left my car unlocked since.........

    So cheeky but brilliant lol!

Yes, when my car was broken into, the Policeman who came said they could get the door open even if it was locked (my thief just smashed the window!). However my friend who lives at the opposite side of town said she more than once found evidence that people were breaking into her car to sleep in it, but they kept breaking the lock or smashing a window, in the end she got so fed up of having to pay for it fixed, she just used to leave it unlocked! Shocking!

My local police told me they never send fingerprint guys for car break ins...the fibbers! LOL!

  • Wow, I doubt it would be a homeless person around here. I think I'd be quite scared if I got in my car and there was someone on the back seat (seen too many scary films) Thank you to everyone for your stories/experiences etc, very interesting.

Does he have alloy wheels and do they have locking wheel nuts?

If so did he check that they didn't take the key to the locking wheel nuts.

It's a favourite tactic. Break into the car and take the wheel nut key. The owner checks all the important stuff and is relieved as nothing appears to have been taken. How many think about something they never need until they get a puncture?

Then a few nights, or even week later they come back and take the wheels. Or they might follow you and take them if you park it somewhere out of the way.

More likely a sarcastic letter left by someone of a more honest nature.

    Seen this happen.

Also seen a car broken into to steal the jack, presumably by someone who had a flat nearby but didn't have a jack on board.
  • Ooo, that's a point about the alloy wheels. I'll tell him to check. Funnilly enough, he noticed a puncture last night too. They are run flats so he's getting it done tomorrow. Thanks for that.

Thanks for the replies. I persuaded him to call the police and they came out in about 10 minutes which was quite a shock then sent someone round to take fingerprints. It seems they were wearing gloves so no luck there. My son said he was absolutely sure he locked it and the police said that there is something these people use - a remote jammer which will get them in the car but they can't drive it away. Of course I agree about the satnav, I wouldn't leave one in the car.
I've heard of those jammer things before. Iirc they have to be in the vicinity when you lock the car, and it, just blocks the remote signal so it stays unlocked.

It's not an E90 3 Series is it? There's been a spate of thefts where the thieves have turned up with a blank key which they've been able to somehow program via the ODB port. It's possible they've broken in to program the key and disable any tracker, and then they'll be back later with their key to take the car

    More details about it here
