    Take the phone it's a good deal. Saying it works out cheaper if buy the handset upfront is fine if you can afford to drop £500 on a phone, which most people can't or won't do

    • If you have no savings, you have more important priorities than borrowing £500 to spend on a mobile toy unless you can borrow for free.
    • If you have savings it makes no sense to pay 20-40% APR on a loan taken for buying a mobile toy while getting, say, 3-4% interest on the savings.
    This is a general observation. It's not that I am saying that it applies to the above deal.

    Most people, even if they have plenty of savings would not buy a mobile outright as they perceive them to be 'free' when taking out a contract. People even balk at paying as little as £50 towards the phone when taking out a contract, even if it saves them money in the long run
