i sent my unlocked k700i to SE and they repaired it for me (under warranty), even though it was unlocked by a local shop

That's good, but in my case SE warned that they always ask whether the network provider code-unlocked the phone or whether it was manually cable unlocked before agreeing to do any warranty repairs, even if the repair has nothing to do with the unlocking eg is to the joystick.
But then I tend to be gadget jinxed

What about buying one on Ebay, used but usually in good condition for about £120?

Had another look and bought brand new off Ebay £119 plus p&p £7 on Orange network.
