Nationwide Mortgages - How long??

  • I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with Nationwide. I'm actually really gutted about this as they've never let me down and I'm always singing their praises to anyone who'll listen!

Applied for a mortgage on 17th Aug and have had to consistently phone to see if there's anything outstanding. Each time there has been and yet no attempt was made to notify us of such, prior to my telephoning them (even though all documentation was passed to them at point of obtaining Mortgage in Principle). They were sat waiting on the contact information for the valuer and yet they had been sent the hom report which has it on it right on day 1! So annoying.

We have to get our official Mortgage Offer by Tuesday or the sellers of the house we are buying emigrate and so signing anything will take FOREVER (our own home completes early August so we need to get moving!). Yet I can't get NW to tell me if this is do-able or not. So frustrating.

This is not the NW customer service I expect or have experienced in the past. I just want a guide to the timescale. We aren't a 'problem' case. We are borrowing well under the maximum we could have had and are putting down over 10% deposit. Our current mortgage is also with them (and we didn't have all this lack of communication when applying for that!).

We are now so far into it that any delay is going to be costly to us but I'm left feeling that all the passing around between people (not talked to the same person twice) is NW telling me they really aren't interested. Not how I want to feel when I'm such a loyal customer!

I wouldn't be moaning if they would just PHONE or EMAIL and keep us updated. It's not too much to ask, is it?

Applied for a mortgage on 17th Aug

    Did you mean July?

I applied on 17th July and got the offer this Monday (28th) - it would have been last Thursday or Friday but the surveyors couldn't visit the property until Friday.

Do you know you can look online (assuming you do online banking and applied in branch)

With the volume of applications they process simply not possible.

Well they managed that with me over the last few weeks. Had to resend several documents and change some figures in the application, each time I got a phone call and/or e-mail to advise what the issue was and what they needed from me.

    Sorry! Yes, July.

We STILL haven't heard anything and that's us without even needing a survey done. I have been tracking online but all it ever tells me is that I've had about 8 Decisions In Principals (why so many?!) and that no documents are outstanding. It hasn't been updated since 26th July.

I don't believe that. They managed it before (we've always had our mortgages with Nationwide - this is our 4th one).

I've noticed a marked decline in their customer service this time though. Even just getting someone to talk to who doesn't need to keep referring to their supervisor has been difficult. I'm really feeling that the people doing the work (with the exception of the person who actually went through our application) aren't very knowledgeable.

13 days until we are meant to move... I'd like to be a bit more confident they are going to come through for us!

Technology is driving efficiency in processing. This is resulting in fewer people employed. Dumbing down is not unique to the mortgage industry unfortunately.
  • I agree Thrugelmir. You are right.

Thankfully our offer arrived late yesterday. Still no note on why it took so long to get when others seemed to fly through. At least it's in. I will think twice about going direct to them again though.
  • Hi All well we are in a right pickle, as nationwide offered us our mortgage on the 18th of June (that will be one month this thursday) but wanted a further 5% our mortgage adviser said she would speak to them regarding the extra 5% on our deposit, it is now 10 days till our suggested date of entry and we have had no answer back from nationwide, have spoke to the mortgage adviser and they say that nationwide are dragging their heel, but in 10 day me and my wife plus our 3 boys will be homeless due to our house getting occupied.

I have manage to get the other 5% but having major problem and don't know who to contact.

    Thank you all as always

I spoke to nationwide today at 14.27 and spoke to Lee who i must say was the most unfriendly when i gave him my details and that i was approved on the 18th June and just wanted an update and then he informed me that i was declined, when i asked for more information he said he was unable to give me any, when i asked why, he said nationwide emailed my broker, who i spoke to on the same day 30mins later who said that they are telling lies as she has never received any emails from nationwide regarding my mortgage being declined. Even after scrapping every penny i have and making up the further 5%. As this is shared scheme and i am trying to be a first time buyer but i am disgusted at nationwide.
