Last week the fully completed reference was sent 4 times by HR, Payroll and HR Manager
Last time this happened to me, the employer;-

first time, the signatory left off their name and title
    then
they didn't tick the "income likely to continue" box
    plus
they didn't stamp it, or send a letterhead with it
    then
finally they got it all correct and it was accepted.

Four attempts, every time the employee/applicant telling me it had been returned fully completed.

I now keep one, just in case I need to tell the employer what to do and where to put it.

You can complain. Expect £25 goodwill gesture.

  • I was asked for an employer's ref after they received my P60 and payslip, which matched the salary amount I stated on the application. I completed the Nationwide form for my employer but the accompanying letterhead sent by HR stated my salary in USD. Nationwide used a strange FX that took £2k off my actual salary so we had to do it all again in sterling this time. Held it up by a week.

Good to see I'm not the only one who's been having trouble with the admin centre.

To cut a long story short, was ringing them on a daily basis recently trying to get stuff sorted.

All sorts of problems with documents not being received, going missing, or being processed.

Got told a different story each time and no one really taking any responsibility.
Managed to get one advisor to admit they were really busy at the moment.

Took about a month to do something that should have taken a few days.
Wouldn't recommend them now unless you really have to!

Offer accepted (on my purchase) 27/10
Filled in my application in branch on 2/10
Valuation booked for 8/10 then moved to 09./10
Just got email today (10/10) to say valuation report is satisfactory and offer has been issued, so hopefully I will get that in the post tomorrow :-)

On the other hand, my buyer's lenders haven't been in contact yet to arrange the valuation on my property

Nationwide are a right shower of sh*t when it comes to processing requested paperwork. My wife and I recently remortgaged with them over the phone through their call centre. I had to send my latest wage slip off FOUR times before they got it. Twice in branch they somehow managed to scan it, whilst chopping off the corner that contained vital information, the others were emails going missing that I had sent to them. Furthermore, on the fourth attempt when they did actually receive it, whoever got it didn't mark it as 'received' on their system, so our application was sat waiting for further info which they actually had, for the best part of a week!! It was then a call every other day, pushing and booting our application along, every call they wanted to clarify something different, which had already been explained on initial application.

Our application couldn't have been more straightforward either. Already 10 years into a mortgage with them, loads of equity from current house for deposit, never missed a payment on anything, both long time employed, great credit etc etc. It was as if they were looking for an excude NOT to lend.

If you can stand their poor customer service, you can actually get good rates off them. However, if you don't wanted added stress, try somewhere else!!!

every day I hear from my financial advisor that we will hear anything from them. And every day I get annoyed and upset because something is missing. Today is the last day.... if we don't hear anything from them, then I will apply for Halifax Mortgage! it has been 8 weeks and builder extended reservation already to save twice!! I can only advise to save your time and your nerves and also your money and DO NOT APPLY for Nationwide Mortgage!

If there is something causing Nationwide delays in offering a case, it is possible the same problems will affect the next application to the next lender.

Abandon an application half way through at your peril and, if doing so, ensure income and outgoing data matches EXACTLY what was on the first application, as it will be picked up by the Hunter system and compared, as an anti-fraud measure.

It's taken 5 months to get the final offer from Nationwide. They've registered documents in the wrong place 2 times, taken 2.5 months before asking for proof of deposit, been sometimes helpful but other times arrogant and very unhelpful on the phone, had computer failures, & we've had to make about 15 phone calls.
We made an official complaint in writing & they've given us £200 compensation.
    It's definitely worth complaining.
  • Hi all,

I don't dispute that many of the posters here have received poor service from Nationwide, and I wanted to provide my experience to help give some balance.

I bought a property for cash with some savings me and my better half had - along with a huge loan from her parents. The reason we didn't get a mortgage at that time was due to an issue on our credit rating.

It took nearly 12 months in total to get the credit rating issue sorted (I had to get the Ombudsmen to force Vodafone to correct the credit file info - indeed Vodafone STILL OWE US COMPENSATION AND AN APOLOGY!).

Anyways so we then started looking for mortgages, and got told by Brittania, Santander and HSBC that they couldn't lend us 60% of our loan to value - BECAUSE WE WOULD USE THAT MONEY TO PAY OFF THE LOAN FROM MY B/Hs PARENTS!!!

    Rediculous but true.

Nationwide was my last chance - I hadn't tried them due to loads of complaints on forums like this, and tbh I very much expected a risk averse company like them to turn us down aswell. Anyways - 9 weeks later I had a cheque arrive in the post from the Solicitor appointed by Nationwide and we could finally pay back the loan.

Getting a mortgage was stressful, and we did have a few issues with things going missing in the post etc but there was generally a fast solution (going to a branch to have documents faxed to the mortgage team etc). Overall I'm very grateful to Nationwide for being reasonable about our application, and not applying stupid rules about "Debt consolidation" unlike the other banks.

Last but not least, we pay 2.7% with upfront fees of £100 for a 5 year base rate tracker which works out £2000 cheaper than what was on offer from Halifax.

I'd say try them - you can do alot worse!

I've just put in a complaint to NW. I'm staircasing atm, just buying the last 30% of my flat, so a relatively small amount of around £40k. Can you believe despite my being a current customer of theirs, stable job, never missed a payment...its been OVER 2 MONTHS since my application (which was done in branch!) and still no funds?!

    Grrrr!

Will let you know what the response is!
