Wont get them for 2K though but they are great although driving on the left stuck behind a bus / lorry you cant see round becomes very annoying. I had a Camaro for 5 years

    Back to OP
Celica 190 - you would be amazed how fast they are in real life conditions and you will be able to pick up a reasonable one for £2k nowadays, get the lift bolts changed and you should not need to pay anything else out until xmas.

You ever tried putting in and taking a baby seat out of a coupe? ;)

Agree, they're excellent cars, but not suitable for a car that will need to hold me, a pushchair, wife, baby+seat and suitcases.

Put the wife in the back and the baby seat in the front, lots of room in the boot for the pushchair
You know you want to ;)

3 Litre Subaru Outback? - but they are so good you might end up keeping it!

If you're going to go down the Legacy/Outback route, and want a car for hooning around in for six months, then forget about the 3 litre, go for a 2 litre twin-turbo B4-RSK or GT/B. Much more fun :)

I just bought a Xsara Vts, 52 plate for less than £700. Not the fastest or coolest car but simply disposable.

    I love less than 30mpg

I'd go for a Jag XJ every time. Should be able to get a good 10 yr old one for under £2k and apart from a couple of things are pretty much bomb proof.

I know it misses all you criteria, but as I have baby wife pushchair and small suit cases in a Ford Puma, when it dies I will be hunting down a Fiat Coupe.

(but I do have an Octavia estate now as well)
  • You can get an early Evo for around that budget.

    Alfa 166 3 litre.

I've had mine for seven years now, and it hasn't had much go wrong in that time (certainly not as unreliable as the Alfa-bashers would make out).

Don't bother with the 2.5 - It's quite a bit slower and not really more eceonomical. My 3.0 gives 23mpg overall (mostly town and shortish runs over the moors). Fully loaded with roofbox, bikes on the back, off to Centreparcs it did 29mpg.
The engine sounds fantastic, it howls as you get near the top of the rev range. Plenty of toys (aircon, heated seats, ABS, traction control, trip computer). You should be able to get a nice one for £1000-1500. Just make sure it has had its cambelt changed (72k) as it is an expensive job (£500+ at specialist) and even more expensive if it lets go.

Top suggestion for an awesome car - risky but awesome, and look what I found

I was drooling so much when I saw this, that I think I will have to go and change my shirt (and my pants - but that is a different matter altogether:o just the way Alfas affect me):D

The Rover/mg 75 was something I hadn't thought of. Are the v6 variants still susceptible to HGF?........!

No the KV6 doesn't have HGF like the K4s are prone to.
Don't forget the MG ZS180 hatch (Rover45 with KV6), quickish, involving and rewarding to drive, best-handling midrange car in its day, and not so barge-like as the 75/ZT..
Two grand will buy a really good one from an enthusiast via a forum.
(I race one so I'm a bit biased)
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
