Ugh! Sorry, but that's something that really gets my goat!

I've been to a couple of weddings where they've done this and I just don't get it. Actually, I do get it - it's always been because they've only got the photographer for a limited time and he wants to dash off before you *actually* cut the thing. So you get locked away from your guests for a few minutes while he gets the shot, then it's on to the next shot.

I was having none of that at our wedding...It's supposed to be your day, not the photographer's!...the photographer photographed us cutting the cake when we cut it - and that was that. And there are all our friends and family in the background of the shots. Lovely.

I agree with you. I will want nice shots of the cake on its own simply because it's going to be stunning, but the photographer can slip inside the room by himself and do those during the drinks reception, giving us a break from photo calls to actually chat to our guests :) we certainly won't be going with him and pretending to cut it. However each to their own!

    It made sense for us.

Do you mind if I ask why? If the photographers were going to be there anyway, why not just have them photo the real thing? It just seems there's enough to do on your wedding day, without "cutting the cake" twice...

I'm not having a go, I just wonder if there's something I'm missing...

They weren't "there anyway" when we actually cut the cake. They had food (1 course) after the speeches and left during the meal.

The photographer was extremely expensive - as it was it cost us over £2.5k for 7 hours with 2 photographers and an album afterwards (album alone cost him over £500).

We did the cut the cake picture twice. Once before the meal just us and the photographer - it was a fake cutting of the cake - and then again in the evening the real cutting of the cake with all the guests.

The reason for doing it this way is so you get the nice posed shot of you cutting the cake and the second one is the fun shot with everyone trying to take their pictures - our photographer took a great shot of everyone photographing us cutting the cake. He didn't have to worry about missing the moment as he already had it covered  You can then use whichever one you prefer when you get your pics back.

I'm afraid I have to agree that its a long time with no nibbles from 11:30-3pm - then again as others have said you expect to be starving at a wedding :rotfl: We married a 2pm (at the reception venue) photos from 2.45 onwards and served drinks and nibbles at the same time, wedding breakfast was at 4.30 and we allowed 2.5 hours. Then we cut the cake and served tea / coffee in the other barn and the evening disco started at 8pm. Our nibbles were sausages on sticks - costing £1 each - and we also had an ice-cream bicycle (£300 for up to 100 people of local quirky ice-cream flavours). We could have gotten away with just the sausages though, but we fell in love with the ice-cream. Perhaps your venue could do alternative cheap nibbles like sausages??

We got married at 11.30am, and sat down to eat at 2.

Originally it was meant to be 3, but we changed it to 2, which suited everyone down to the ground, as it meant afterwards, those who wanted to mingle, could, and those who wanted to pop off and freshen up, could, ready for the evening.

Saying that, I went to a wedding, i can't remember what time they got married, but there was NO food offered at all. Come the evening, all there was, were arty farty sandwiches and nibbles and there wasn't even eough for everyone, so I didn't get a look in and ate nothing for the entire day.

I was so drunk I can hardly remember the day :rotfl: (It was in a castle in the middle of nowhere so nowt else to do but drink, chat, drink, chat, drink, chat...)

At least your guests will be getting fed, so if you want 3pm to eat, you stick with it :) (if it were me though, I'd change it to 2pm ;)) xx

Really? I've never been to a proper wedding as an adult but from looking at the packages on offer at venues around here, I got the impression that all people did at weddings was eat!

Ours will have canapes (substantial and hot) with the drinks reception....three course wedding breakfast....and buffet in the evening. But the premium option at our venue included canapes, five course wedding breakfast, buffet, and then a midnight snack (bacon rolls or similar) as well! If you went to a wedding like that you would be getting fed on four separate occasions. Crazy...

:rotfl: sounds like a great day to me.We cant really eat at 2,we wont get to the venue till around 1.15-1.30 and then we have welcome drinks and i really want pics done before hand so would be a bit rushed if we was to eat at 2,going to leave it at 3 and will just let my 38 guests know so they can eat a big brekkie, bring a snack or just wait till 3.TBH like i said before i want some personal pics done with alot of my guests EG me and some of my best friends,me and my sisters,me and my bro etc etc and the same for H2B with his family,so there wont be much time for guests to hang around ;)

All the recent weddings I've been to their haven't been any canapes - its a good way of saving money, but depending on the timings of the wedding you can be starving. Worst one was when I was a bridesmaid for 2pm wedding. We were so busy rushing around all morning and no-one had ordered lunch, then there were no canapes and the food wasn't until 5.30pm  Don't know how I didn't faint :p

The five course with canapes and evening buffet sounds extreme though! We did min-canapes (sausages on sticks and the ice-cream van), 3 course dinner, cake and bacon & chip butties in the evening. I recommend everyone go the bacon buttie route - at 9.30/10pm ish they go down really well.

What do people normally do for the 4 hours between breakfast and lunch, or the 4 hours between lunch and dinner?

It seems that it's not just suppliers that up prices when they hear "wedding" ... but guests' stomachs up their game too! :D

Surely I'm not the only one who knows that, at a wedding, you're going to be eating late in the afternoon, thus make sure you've had an early lunch / late breakfast ... am I?!
