I sat and watched my ex husbands vasectomy, he said that the needles stung when they numbed the area, then all the doctor did was make a tiny cut about a cm long, and pull a white tube out, cut an inch out of it and put it back in, soluble stitches.

He wore swimming trunks, then about four pairs of underpants for support cos it ached, the stitches came out in the bath. he was fine after a week. Word of advice, if you have kids, pets etc put a cushion in your lap when you're sitting down.!

When I had mine done it was at local GP's and all was explained . Doctor said to bring some music to listen to so when my Appointment came I took a cd . However when I got to the surgery the doctor had ENYA playing ( not my cup of tea ) but I didn't want to argue with the man who was soon going to have my bits in his hands.
After the doctor rummaged around and rolled my "tubes" to see which ones needed cutting he did it quite swiftly.
I walked home and indeed had to drive soon after. I am not by any means a he man but as long as I walked with a wide gait ;-) I found it possible to get around fine . I did take a couple of days off my work ( might filling in a supermarket ).

    No sweat.

All I can say is don't rush it afterwards. I went back to work the day after having mine done, and managed to burst my stitches.

Invest in some nice tight pants - I found wearing 2 pairs (1 the wrong way around) really helped to prevent any swelling.
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

OH drove himself home after his, about an hour's journey. Not recommended but he'd been all vague about it and I didn't even know it was being done that day until the evening! He was a bit sore and sorry for himself a couple of days, but he went back to work the next day as self employed so didn't have a lot of choice, you have to work unless you are dying.

He didn't say much about the procedure, I got the impression the injection was the worst bit, of course, but the rest was ok. He had not much swelling and no real problems, didn't need to sit on a cushion or icepacks or anything. He paid to have his done at a small private clinic, don't know if that made any difference compared to a GP or NHS one.

Just be warned it can take quite a long time for all those little swimmers to be out of the way. It took about 5 months for him to get the all clear and it wasn't for lack of action! Little !!!!!!s just didn't want to take the hint.

I know we all joke about it a bit but I can totally understand the nerves. It'll be ok though. And it's FANTASTIC not to have to worry about pregnancy afterwards, a real weight off your mind, improves your sex life no end as there's no stressing.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

I went with Marie Stopes which use a different procedure that what happens on the NHS. It was the best £400 quid I ever spent, the procedure took about 15mins The only disconcerting bit was the injection in the plums and the realisation that the burning smell was me

I had the afternoon off and was back to work the next day, took about 4 weeks to clear the old pipes and I received a certificate to say I was officially a Jaffa :j.

Wish I had had it done aged 17 would have saved a lot of stress and worry. Shame my GP wouldn't refer me as I may change my mind but hey ho all sorted. They also knock off about £80 during National vasectomy week for the msers that fancy it.

My OH had one in Jan. he had to be hairless and the procedure itself didnt hurt. He was tender for 2 days afterwards and a little bruised but said it was fine. He wasnt allowed to lift anything for 3 days so like another poster said - get some movies on and chill in bed/on the couch. My OH had it done on the Thursday and was back to work on the Monday.

Also - you cant drive for 24 hours after it. Your insurance is invalid!

The doc doing my OH's invited me to watch. I might see if I can make a living from doing them as all you seem to need are a scalpel, crochet hook and blowtorch! :D

dh went to the pub same night and helped look after kids as i was ready for having our 3rd he said it was sore but nothing more ,he did give the drs a good laugh about 4 months later when he went to see them in a panic as he could feel a lump and dr told him it was his knots from op hence one red faced hubby who said something along the lines of "they dont tell you about the knots "

My two-penn'orth. An ex-colleague of mine told me that when her husband had a vasectomy, about 20-odd years ago, he came home from the op and told her that the doctor had advised them to have lots of sex (using a condom, obviously) to help clear the build up of sperm. She obliged for months, before the penny finally dropped with a loud "clang"! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

PS: OP, I love the title of this thread "male vasectomy". Is there any other kind? ;):D
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
