Who I contact regarding wrong time on meter?

I received an email today from Scottish Power to submit my meter readings. I got my readings. My meter has a button which I press to select what display - total units, day units, night units, date and time. I noticed that the clock on the meter is wrong, It was showing 2:30am just now - 7 hours behind. I have no idea how long it has been like this, as normally I just see the units used displays.

I because I don't have any gas to my property and have a heat source pump to heat my water. With HCP, the water only heats to 57c and need the immersion heater to top it up to 62c and is on half an hour each day. This means that its on during the expensive day units.

So who do I contact regarding this? My energy supplier (Scot P), the network? Also my bills need recalculating as well. Probably can't do anything before SP.

Can't you just change the timer on the immersion heater so it turns on during the E7 hours?

I'd take advantage of the time difference whilst I could.

Your bills will not be adjusted. You may receive a goodwill payment but that is not guaranteed.

Isn't 57c OK? My water only heats to 50c and it's fine.

Was told this because of legionella can thrive at 57c.

The ideal growth range is 32c to 42c. Legionella bacteria can exist in temperatures of up to around 47c but they do not multiply. They will be destroyed at temperatures of 50c and above.

It is to your great advantage to have your clock so wrong!

Leave it to them to discover themselves, and carry on paying night time rates for 7 hours of day time activities - washing machine/dishwasher/tv etc.

  • you should contact your supplier...
the clock runs from the mains supply but has a lithium battery for when its off circuit and on the shelf, so its more than likely the battery failed on shelf and the time has been incorrect since it was installed...
as someone said you could be better off so work out if you are or not and if so say nothing...

Be very careful with this. Some suppliers attempt to recalculate it rather than just correct the meter and leave it in your favour which is the older non complaint generating method.

Be aware of the 12 month back billing policy covering this which can be voided if you knowingly prevent resolution.

If you told your supplier, they will send out an engineer to investigate it. He will change it and inform the supplier of the fault and the new meter. He may not tell them anymore than the fact is was incorrect...he may not say its 7 hours. If a supplier then wants to re-estimate the bills, they will ask you to give readings off the new meter. Be wary of this method since in a colder period, they will naturally get a higher night usage but in summer periods, the heating % of your bills would be less.

The meter reader is supposed to spot this.

Winter is just over, so does this mean you have been paying way too much all winter? Obviously, if they are willing to estimate based on normal usage profile, you would want to get your money back.

If it was November now, there is a point in not telling until the meter reader finds out, but the next meter visit will probably happen before next winter.

There's a very good chance the meter reader won't notice the time is wrong anyway. They generally give them a quick glance over looking for signs of tampering and input the readings into their PDA then leave.
