  • Hi

There PAN is 60 but looking at trends over last 4 years they have gone over up to 64 on a yr 3 intake and are currently under on all other years

just very odd to be linked for siblings but not if you attended, apparently according to admissions this has not happened in three years but sadly happened to 6 children

You need to find out what the admission rules are and what order they were in. It sounds like the give priority to siblings of children attending the school before giving priority to children at the infant school but you need to find out exactly what the rules are and what order they are applied in to get more information. You also need to make sure that they have applied their own rules correctly as mistakes can sometimes happen.

Year 3 is outside KS1 so the restrictions of infant class size at appeals doesnt apply. This means that you can mention all the reasons you have for wanting a place at the school and you could certainly argue that they have admitted 64 children in the year group previously and they appear to have coped with that so why couldnt they do so again. You could also mention the incorrect information you were given previously about the sites being linked or not linked - if you have anything in writing then include that as evidence. Try looking at information on the ACE website - www.ace-ed.org.uk as I've always found that very helpful.

My DD's year went up to 66. School fought adding. Number 66 (when they were already at 65) and lost at appeal, so I would think if you argue previous relaxation of PAN That you would have a chance at appeal. Good luck!

When they admitted 64 though was that under the sibling criteria? If so, then they really had no option if it was set down in the admission criteria. Allowing others in on the next criteria is very different, it opens the floodgates. To gain admission under that you will need compelling reasons. The school may have "coped" but those extra children will have placed a strain on resources and teaching space, as the PAN is the optimum number for all concerned.

Another issue is the cohort, some are more challenging than others, some time ago I successfully defended an appeal for the school where I am a governor, I did so on the grounds that that class had an unusually high quota of children with varying special needs and that it was simply not viable to have another child in that equation.

Would you really want to win an appeal than meant your child was in such a huge class?

I assume it is two form entry. However, even one or two over PAN can make a huge difference to the quality of education for all the children, especially in a class where there are already challenging behaviours but no additional monies for specific support.

    Hi All

Just looking for some advice on "linked" schools and appeals. A quick outline, my child has been attending an out of catchment infant school from Yr R to Yr 2 had applied for the linked on site junoiur school and have been turned down. Have phoned and discussed with admissions some points and the highest intake was a sibling attending the linked school, however many months ago when worrying that my daughhter wouldnt get a place I emailed admissions and they told me that the schools were not linked just bacause they are on the same site. My confussion is why are they linked in some ways but not in others ? can a school be linked only if you have a sibling ?. As having only one child, and please no one take this the wrong but its so discriminating . I will be appealing to the juniours but unless like previously said I can find an error feel that my walfare issue will be useless, I wont give up though .

    thanks all x

the sibling link is a logical one - having parents going in two directions in a morning isn't practical. Prioritising siblings is, I think, about making sure that this kind of pressure isn't put on the average family. If you only have one child or you only have one child in school, you wouldn't be facing this kind of issue which is why this link doesn't exist as a priority for you. It's not unreasonable in those circumstances to prioritise siblings, is it?

Personally, I think it make no sense to give preference to a link school over proximity. My son didn't get a place in our local school only a few yards away because we moved in year and all places (for intake in Y4) had been given to the link school, of which many children lived out of catchment area miles away. My son was not the only one.

This arose because one junior school was put under remedial measures, prompting application to get a place to our local infant schools which are big enough to take on kids from out of catchment area, and that gave them priority to the link junior school.

As a result, my son has to travel to the other school a few miles away. To our benefit, the junior school under remedial measure got a lot of support and within 6 months after OFSTED report, got a 2 following new management. I am extremely pleased with the school in every way, but it means having to travel totally out of my way to work, adding 20 minutes mornings and evenings and my son's friends all live further away.

I assume in this case that it is the other way around, and going to the link school is not priority, or it is, but they managed to get enough applications just from pupils with siblings from linked school (or schools?).

Have you inquire about the waiting list? How far down would your son be?

It seems weird this has happened. Assuming there's 60 in Year 2, they can't all be siblings so surely there should be enough space for them all? Are children moving to the juniors from another school and using the sibling criteria to get in? It does seem strange unless there's a lot of linked schools near you meaning a lot of people are applying (in my area ours is he only one and applying is pretty much a formality).
