School appeals - help offered

Hi Folks
I have twins who unfortunately did not get a place on the 1st choice school. I have been told that they have been ranked 6th & 7th on the waiting list, so presumably 5 students will be considered before them, should a place become available. By the way, It is a C of E school.
If you were in my situation, would you appeal against the decision?
Thank You.0 -

I personally don't think you have anything to loose by appealing the decision, so worth doing. As it is a faith school you would need to appeal to the Board of Governors for a place. If you are practising members of the Church community you could cite this as the reason why it is important that your child attends a school that educates children in line with your beliefs and that of the community they are part of.0 -

You ask would we appeal in your situation but have given no info to base our answer on, other than your children didn't get into your first choice school. Why didn't they get in? Why do they need to go to that particular school?0 -

i have been asked to look at a Yr R mid-term application that is going to appeal for someone newly moved to area, but have no idea on how to proceed, as all information given is based upon children who were accepted into the school in september.
the school currently have 40 children in the year group, split over 2 classes, so numbers wise, taking an additional child doesnt put them over. Im not sure at this stage if space is an issue and whether that can come into play, when numbers are way below maximums?

Space could be an issue, that will be disclosed on the school Asset Management Plan, which will detail how many children per bay/class is allowed. Additionally, if there are a lot of special needs cases in each group that will be a factor. What was the reason given for the application failing?0

Then they will have exceeded maximum number on roll as per the Asset Management Plan. This is done by the LEA and it analyses the teaching spaces and common spaces and works out the maximum number on roll for safety/comfort reasons. Once that number is reached they are not obliged to take any more children. An appeal is unlikely to succeed if there is another school in the vicinity unless there are special reasons; very close relatives at the school, special needs that the school is uniquely equipped to deal with, faith issues (less likely) another child about to leave, any other circumstances that would mean that school was especially chosen/suitable.0

Could someone please explain to me how the school years system works? I cannot find this information anywhere.

Also do school also have middle school like they did in the old days? or is it just straight primary and secondary school now?0 -
It could depend on where you are: Scotland use different names, but assuming England ...atlantis187 wrote: »Could someone please explain to me how the school years system works? I cannot find this information anywhere.
My son is turned 4 in december 2011 and will be starting school this september what year will he go into will it be Y1 or Y2
So Reception for 4-5 year olds; Y1 for 5-6; Y2 for 6-7 and in some areas these would be in an Infant School rather than a Primary School.
Juniors are Y3 - Y6: so 7-8, 8-9, 9-10 and 10-11.
Then they move on to Secondary, where you find years 7-11, starting with the 11-12 year olds and ending with the 15-16 year olds.
Years 12 and 13 are post 16, so might be in a separate part of the school, or somewhere else entirely.
I'll let someone else describe where the Key Stages fall because I'm a bit rusty on those.atlantis187 wrote: »Also do school also have middle school like they did in the old days? or is it just straight primary and secondary school now?Signature removed for peace of mind0
