    OP, your pan isn't defective.

I have a Le Creuset pan which has a non stick surface. It has also peeled off. I asked someone about this at the weekend as i was in a Le Creuset shop. Le Creuset don't offer a guarantee on non stick surfaces as they can be damaged by misuse. If you have the pan too hot when it is empty, it will affect the non stick coating.

It's worth calling them to ask them but i wouldn't hold your breath. I've copied this from their website for you :

    Overheating

Damage from overheating is instantly recognisable. The non-stick surface becomes discoloured and in severe cases detaches from the pan in the form of blistering or peeling.

@wealdroam is the type of person who be struck from the board, trying to put me down because I had a problem with a debt collector, scum.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it isn't me you are calling scum.

Erm, I wouldn't describe the debt collector as the problem, it's the debtor that's avoided paying for 4 1/2 yrs. within the next year I imagine this will go to court so your problems are only going to get worse

No, I'm in dispute of it with the original debt collector the bottom feeders I was asking about were just doorstep collector's, I've already refused to have any contact with them. So you shouldn't comment if you don't know the circumstances.

No, I've already been in-touch with Selfridges who are really helpful, they've already told me that it is a fault in the pan range and will replace it.

It couldn't have over heated as it's only ever been on a normal gas hob.

P.s, To all the idiots who said it can't be done, they said they don't need a receipt because it's a fault with the good Le Creuset couldn't give toss who's it from they'll just replace it because (in their words) 'The pan has a 10 year guarantee and if the non-stick coating peels of that's no a fault with the non-stick, it's with the whole pan.'

    Case closed.

All 'the idiots' gave you the correct answers. You've managed the replacement via goodwill. They had no reason to replace without proof of purchase which was your original question.

But, most importantly, they did :T

Yes completely agree. Goodwill tends to throw out any consumer advice on certain situations as its an wild card on your rights but it doesn't make the advice posted wrong and not enough to be called names when they tried to advise you.

How on earth were 'all the idiots' supposed to know that Selfridges would come up with that explanation?

Especially when you yourself told us they would need a proof of purchase...

I contacted Selfridges to make a complaint because peeling non-stick coatings aren't normal and they said they might be able replace it but would need proof of purchase.

    Your question...

My question is, do you need proof of purchase for a defective product?

You can overheat a pan on a normal gas hob. Just heat it when it's empty and it will damage the non stick coating.

I don't know whether to believe your post as a member of staff in the Le Creuset shop told me that non stick coatings aren't covered by the 10 year guarantee.

It's what I was told by Selfridges, the pan has a max temp of 350c I think so it'd be hard to hit that.
