Don't consider buying a new pc or mac just because of a virus infection. Waddler's spot-on with re-infectors...best thing to do is back up all your stuff (carefully, including scanning the backups before reinstating them) and reinstalling windows after wiping the hdd. If you don't have a windows disk, if you've got a valid COA on the base, you just need an image of the correct version of windows to burn to a disk and reinstall...I'm sure someone like Take This will be able to point you to a download of the correct version...he's good at that sort of thing

p.s. after a fresh install, you'll probably think you've got a new pc anyway
not suggesting they buy a mac because of the post but macs work better than pcs and dont have viruses.
switched about two years ago after years of pc use and all the issues i had dissapeared.
i never have the issues i did with pcs.
macs are more expensive but definately worth it.0 -

On phone again as avast is doing a scan after reboot, so will reply to all points later.
Will run all suggested scans as well when I get back on.
I do have an old PC I can check if it still works if need be but only have 1 monitor.0 -
:rotfl: hence why a java exploit took out loads of Macs t'other week :rotfl:
i am not saying its impossible to write a virus for a mac thats just stupid but hackers go for maximum effect.
there will always be more pcs than macs so attacking pcs will always be preffered by hackers.
looks like what you are talking about happened with lion which is supposed to be full of issues.
i have virus protection on my mac but no viruses whereas on my pc i was getting them every week.0 -
Well, the good news is i've done the avast scan and now i'm not having the task manager or firewall problems.
I've had to reinstall some programs as the .exe's seem to have been infected.
I will now run the scans suggested by Waddler.0 -

That's fine - no recovery partition - I didn't expect to see one to be honest. If you want to reinstall you'll have to get a disk.0

I shall do all the backing up tomorrow. I have the day free, although had hoped to do something more exciting
Will need advice on how to wipe etc etc.
I do indeed have a valid COA on my PC - at least I hope it's valid or i've been conned!0
