Their website says otherwise.
So when did you request that information?
Look at post#14 and post#16.
I emailed them(secure message) yesterday afternoon and got back the reply I posted in #16 a couple of hours later.
As it seems there are some Aldi stores listed I have sent a further email asking for confirmation.0 -
They pay cashback based on the store's MCC (merchant category code) set by Mastercard.
Aldi is presumably set up on one of the supermarket MCC's so cashback will be paid at 1% there. M&S are set up as a supermarket so you earn 1% on purchases, not 2%.
The list that Santander have available is just a marketing tool and has no actual relevance to the cashback earned, if the transaction has the correct MCC cashback will be paid. The staff are pretty clueless about the whole thing really.
In the past month I have made purchases at both Aldi (not a store on the list provided by Cardew) and Lidl.
Both have their MCC description as:
GROCERY STORES, SUPERMARKETS
which is the same as Tesco, Asda, etc (excluding their fuel outlets)
Edit: The Lidl store I used is not on the Santander website either. But as the website says:Please note not all retailers will be covered in this list and we will from time to time update it.0 -

But how do you know if it's got the correct MCC cashback?
It seems the only way you can find out is to wait and see if you get paid on your monthly statement.
Even then, they do not break down the cashback payment so you have no idea what items attracted cashback and what items did not.
I will certainly cancel it when I have to pay for it unless they make the process more transparent.0 -

I contacted Santander about Aldi and Lidl and got an equally unhelpful reply. However, I've now received a statement and have been able to work out that I did receive 1% cashback on a shop at Aldi, even though it was a branch (Stratford upon Avon) not listed on their website.
I've used the card at Lidl today so here's hoping!0 -

I spent a few months checking all my transactions and working out the cashback. What I received was close enough to my calculations not to worry so I now accept what they pay me each month.0

Have had a 123 credit card for 1 month, and just looked at the website to download a statement. But I couldn't, just a list of transactions.
So, is the cashback only shown on the paper statement?
I would like to know as I buy a fair amount of diesel, yet I can't find our local Shell station on the Santander list and need to know if I should buy fuel somewhere else. But then again, it just might be that the address used is the bottom line of their postal address which might not show up when I put the name of the village in. I would like to know, but can't tell from the list of transactions online.
And for info, our local Lidl wasn't on the list a few weeks ago, but now it is which looks like they are being added in now that all Lidl branches take credit cards.

Brilliant thread, thank you!
I have just activated my 123 account after a significant delay (shameful, I know) and the CS lady indicated to me that the coding is sensitive enough to distinguish between supermarket fuel transactions and others.
What she couldn't tell me was whether Aldi or Lidl counted as supermarkets though. I can see from the list above that Aldi is on there, but Lidl?
