what about putting the bar down on the conveyor belt in the supermarket so the next person can put their shopping down? I always do but get annoyed if the person behind me can't be bothered to thank me. I also find it annoying if the person in front of me can't be bothered to put the bar down.
Btw, I do thank anyone who stops to let my car pass.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
I raise my fingers to say thanks in that situation. Not really as a thanks; more of an acknowledgment.
If someone's given up their right of way to let me through, that's different, and I'll give them a much more obvious thank-you gesture.0 -
Yes. Always. Regardless of whether or not I have right of way. As has been said, courtesy costs nothing.
If you really want some fun and the other driver is the opposite gender, try blowing them a kiss. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Round these parts few people can be bothered but when they do they usually just lift their fingers off the steering wheel at you rather than lift their hand and give a partial wave. Still I suppose something is better than almost nothing0

If I'm going to wave, I'll lift my hand to shoulder height like a stereotypical Red Indian saying "How" or if the window is open, hold out a "thumbs up".
I was once let out of a side-turning in the morning rush hour by a mum on the school run (a surprise in itself) then had to look back to check I'd seen what I thought I had... the hand she'd waved me on with was inside SootyI need to think of something new here...0 -
I always give a little wave of thanks, or if I can't release the wheel and they end up behind me, I give them a single flash of the hazard lights as soon as i've got into position.
With cars coming the opposite way as mentioned in the OP, I wave only to thank them for not being complete idiots.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I always thank people and like another poster I find it seems to be older men who are completely ignorant.
I also let people out of side roads, a few seconds doesn't really make much difference to my journey.
If my son holds a door open for someone and they just sail through without even looking at him he says "you're welcome" loudly.14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140
