Avoiding ryanair Fees

Hi

I'm sorry if i've posted in the wrong place ! I know I've seen a thread like this before but I've checked and can't seem to get it when I search.

Anyway my family are heading away this summer and are flying with Ryanair ! Flights are so expensive double what they were last year and thus meaning we have to fly ryanair again, but I want to avoid their 6euro /person/flight charge as it'd be 48 euro ontop of the flights.

I know they say prepaid mastercards do not incur the charges but I've no idea about these - I see that there are fees and charges etc... Im completly clueless to this sort of thing, I pay cash at all times or debit card - we do not own a credit card ! Can anyone advise me the best card to get and the easiest way to get one - to pay 522euro to ryanair - not worrying about using overseas etc...?

Many thanks in advance.

You need the Ryanair Cash Passport to avoid the £6 booking fee:

    http://www.cashpassport.com/1/ryanair/

There are a number of issues with it, which you need to be aware of. There's a minimum loading of £150 every time you top up, a monthly fee after 6 months inactivity etc.

By the way, you can save money by booking the return leg of your journey as a separate single booking. That's because they charge the same sum in euros rather than pounds. For example, if the return leg is £120, it will cost €120 if booked as a single flight to the UK. €120 equals £100, so that's a saving of £20.

You can use the Ryanair Cash Passport to book flights in euros but there's a loading fee of 5.75%. It's cheaper to use a MasterCard PrePay for flights in Euros such as offered by CaxtonFX:

It's worth reading other threads on this board to learn more about these cards.

When booking from some countries (including the UK) the only way to avoid Ryanair card fees is to use Ryanair's own prepaid Mastercard, while in other countries any prepaid Mastercard will do.

Where are you flying from? You quote prices in Euros, so I guess you're not flying from the UK. Which country do you live in? I think the important factor for Ryanair when deciding which country you are booking from is the address the payment card is registered to, but I'm not sure.

Another point to take into account - if you get a Ryanair prepaid Mastercard in Sterling and use it to pay for flights in Euros, you'll get a bad exchange rate. This could even cost you as much as the fees you're trying to avoid...

Don't forget if you are booking your holiday through someone like Travelrepublic, you only pay their card charges not Ryanairs. We have done this and saved money.

The only potential problem with doing this is that if the outbound flight is cancelled, but if the inbound flight is still running to schedule, Ryanair would only issue a refund for the outbound flight.

It`s a wonder anyone can actually find a flight to book with their idiotic "security codes" which log you out after a couple of clicks whilst looking for a flight.
The UK is totally useless, it only allows you to move one day at a time.
The Irish is better but you still get logged out after a few clicks.

Thanks for replys - we are in N Ireland so will be flying from Dublin ! Thats why we're quoted euros - I didn't realise that some mastercards will still be charged depending on country of origin ! Any hints for Ireland - with N Irish address?

    Many thanks again

I use a prepay mastercard (as opposed to the Ryanair cash passport) for booking flights to the UK, and never get charged the €6 fee despite declaring a UK address.

You can use a prepay master card without charge for flights from any country except UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Spain.

For flights from the Irish Republic you still need a Ryanair cash passport to avoid the €6 fee. The card costs €10 to buy in the Republic, and you receive a €10 voucher to be used against a flight. With a UK address in Northern Ireland it's £6 to buy, and you get a £6 voucher. Beware, with a sterling card you'll find the euro exchange rate is inflated by 5.75%.

Thanks for that - im such a dope - I can't get my head around it at all ! So does this mean that i'd nearly be as well just to pay the 48euro as we may end up getting charged something similar anyway ??? Maybe too much hard work judging by some of the comments for trying to obtain the ryanair card!

In Ireland the card costs 10 euros and you get that back when you pay for your first booking with it......no brainer!
