I avoid aspartame as well but find it really difficult to buy squash without it. I generally gets the Rocks organic or the bottlegreen or the sainsbugs TTD one. All the big brand ones seem to contain it.

Think Robinsons Natural in the small thin bottle was ok too but hugely calorific sugar wise.

I've got some Rocks left over from last year but since January I've just mainly had just tap water as I also gave up carbonated drinks, am a huge Pepsi fan so was hard at first. Has saved a LOT!

I'll be checking for that cheap tinned salmon (Aldi).

You could get a year's supply in early Dec when Morries have it on offer.

M&S have salmon on offer at the mo I think, £1.50 ish though.

In general I've mainly given up buying anything I can make myself.

So many of us with the same ideas!
I am fortunate that we have Lidl,Aldi B&M and most of the other usual suspects in our area.
Sometimes I get frustrated that we seem to be forced to dumb down our food choices in able to live.
I am another one who misses corned beef.
    Tuna I get from B&M
But Marmite must cost more than gold, pound for pound.
I hate Vegemite so I can't use that instead even though it is cheaper.
If the lovers of peanut butter know anyone with a Costco card they sell Skippy PB there in huge jars and it is a bargain.
Sometimes I get a headache just trying to balance it all out!
On a slightly different tangent went out last night for the first time since Christmas I spent all night asking 'how much' when we went into different bars!
I would love how a certain well known bar can charge £3.55 for a single Vodka & diet coke and £4.95 for a bottle of wine?Which was surprisingly drinkable!
You can imagine the option we chose.
No wonder half the pubs were nearly empty.

I know it sounds daft but just after christmas in Sainsbobs they had a special offer of aberdeen angus steak at half price at £11.00 a kilo Its without doubt the nicest I have tasted and I only buy some when its on an offer like that yesterday I was with my friend in Sainsbobs in Dartford and the full price now is over £36 a kilo Even if they had a half price offer I wouldn't pay that sort of money for it .I do enjoy a bit of steak now and agin its my treat to myself with some salad and new potatos and a nice G&T with ice and slice but at that price I'm afraid I won't be buying it Who on earth could afford to pay over 18.00 a pound for steak it must be gold lined .We also saw at a 'reduced price' in there two tiny lamb shanks for £6.05, needless to say we just looked, laughed and walked away.Supermarkets will find that folk aren't silly and just don't have that sort of cash anymore Even if I could afford it i just refuse to pay it I'd rather have egg and chips :):)

Glad I read this thread, I was beginning to think I was just turning into an old moaner!! Salmon for OH lunchbox now a rarity, only if on very good offer. Peanut butter, haven't been buying since son moved out couple months ago. Went to buy Tesco own brand, £2.39 a jar was in shock. Special K for OH now only a rare purchase. Edwards mixed pickle (how sad am I) up to £1.89 The scary thing is it isn't just our luxury items that are going up, it is the everyday basics. Brands no longer feature in my shop unless definately proved a better buy. Pound shops etc first stop on shopping trip.

Thinking about it, I don't think I've really stopped buying anything full stop, rather that I've changed where/when I shop. I never pay full price for branded stuff (supermarket prices that is, excluding Costco from this as their prices are not supermarket level prices normally) I don't buy a huge amount of branded products anyway, if I can find an alternative that I like as much as the branded version and costs less, then I am not going to buy branded just because it's a big name brand! I like sniffing out bargains, nearly all the meat and fish in our freezer is yellow stickered, the rest is from Costco.

This year OH and I have become big fans of Lidl and Costco :j Costco is a bit of a trip so we make sure that our journey warrants the fuel costs, and always come home with some great bargains on the few branded items we do buy, plus we're loving some of Costco's own branded stuff. We also use Morrisons for bits and pieces - ours has just had a revamp and is a pretty good store, hardly ever go in Tesco or Sainsburys now. The last time I ventured into Tesco I took one look at the price of something and said out loud "how much? I'll get that in Lidl far cheaper", not realising one of the managers was stood next to me - they gave me a right glare :p

And glad it's not just us who forgets to label stuff in the freezer/or the labels fall off and we have to play "what's this frozen lump in the plastic container then?" :D

Sainsbury's own brand squash all have sucralose instead; which is still a sweetener but less iffy than aspartame; the basics orange and summer fruits ones are horrible but the blackberry and apple (?I think that is their 'purple' flavour one's combination lol) actually tastes quite decent and like Robinsons. I hate artificial sweeteners but it doesn't taste like it contains any. Also Robinsons 'select' type of squash doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners, and nor do any of the high juices in any of the major supermarkets. There is a cheap high juice in tesco now, its called sun-sip but is made by Prince's, it is only £1.09 and contains no nasties either xx

I refuse to pay £1.00 for a small tub of hummus from Mr T, so buy their Oakland one which has more in tub for 95p (although bulked out with cornflour, probably bad for you, might give up altogether soon!).

Happily have found Nutella and Marmite in Mr Al, cheaper than Mr T!

Sainsbury's basic hummus is really good, no rubbish, just less tahini (which tastes more authentic anyway, traditional hummus never has an overpowering tahini taste) struggling to find it on MyS for some reason though xx

Stuff I can no longer afford to buy...

Fresh fish or seafood. Occasionally I buy frozen if the deal is an amazing one, but it rarely is.

Fresh fruit salads, or infact any salads. Unless they are reduced, used to love these as a guilty pleasure for lunch but just can't justify it anymore.

Heinz soup, I now buy Sainsburys own brand but only when its on offer.

Fresh vegetables, I only buy frozen now- unless they are reduced end of day stuff.

Bottled water- only went through 5 days in one week with this one two summers ago before I shocked myself out of it! I know people who do this once per day every day! Thats £400 odd a year!!

Similarly coffee. Used to have this for lunch but its just not justifiable now, if I feel slowed down I eat a few coffee beans. OK not as tasty but does give a quick boost of caffiene but without the additional expense.

Nail varnish. I used to buy this several years ago, it just feels a bit of a pointless expense for me now. I am in and out of hot water too often to keep my hands and nails looking how I'd like them to be and never really feel in the mood to dress up to that extent anymore, not felt that way for years,

TV licence! My TV died a few months ago. I can't afford a new one and even if I could I wouldn't be able to afford the licence so this means no TV. I do miss not having a TV and as much as a I value the iplayer my computer is just so old that its not so easy to watch- keeps freezing everything and then speeding up which can spoil the programme. Been listening to the radio instead.

Lottery tickets. OK I was never big on the lottery spend issue but think if I was going to have won anyting I'd have won it by now. I went through a few years of entering every month and yet never got anything more then 2 numbers, just think some of us are not fated to win and I'm not going to waste my money trying to disprove this.

Organic foods, some foods you can spot the taste difference with, for example corgettes and marrows do taste different if organic or not organic, I used to also like the idea of voting with my feet on this one but can't afford to do so now.

Tinned tomatoes, even the value range. I've just learned to go without now, food a little drier but still serves the same purpose if just a tad less filling.

Also, I'll look in every store I can feasably get to for food offers before buying anything, infact I'd go as far as saying if it costs more then £1 I will wait for it to be on offer of at least a 30% reduction before buying it, can mean I sometimes have to go without if I can't afford something but at least I can remind myself I've tried when I'm sitting at home hungry!

I couldnt live without tinned tomatoes or passata, they make so many meals and still very cheap. I try not to buy salad stuff but have been making lots of mexican bean salads which consists of tinned beans, onion, lime juice/zest, tomatoes, a few slices of jalapenos from a jar and avocado if I can one at a reasonable price.

My husband asked me to get salad, but by the time you buy toms, cuc, lettuce, spring onion, peppers etc which are roughly £1 each item it mounts up quite a bit. Even in the summer salad stuff isnt much cheaper.
