Remembering all my passwords!
Comments
-
I use Keepass and Lastpass.
Keepass in case lastpass isn't available (although there is a local cached copy of the lastpass database stored on your machine). Also Keepassdroid to access my Keepass database (stored in dropbox) on my phone.
Every website has a unique pseudo-random password made up of upper/lower case, numbers, and special characters. The passwords are generated by Keepass.
Once you get used to it, it's very simple and easy.0 -
For numeric pin codes I use a formula whereby I add the individual digits to a written down pin. E.G.
I write down "5432 Brist"
That means that
5432 written down code
1197 individual digits to add (the area code for Bristol)
6529 actual pin
All passwords I set have names. E.G. Churchi (Churchill in seven digits) stands for "we will fight them on the beaches" which I write as ww£tot~.
Depending on the lenght of the password I convert 2-4 digits of each URL into a code. E.g. the password with the name "2churchi" would be:
- for hsbc.com/ : bsww£tot~
- moneysavingexpert.com/ : noww£tot~0 -
So you're suggesting using the same password for everything?
Not necessarily. But you could change all the passwords that have been generated for you by online providers to those chosen by yourself, with a core 'scheme' by which you can remember them.
My point was that you don't have to stick with those passwords given to you, in most cases.0 -
Fair enough, but you still typically have user names (which are often not changeable) and memorable info etc. to remember/store, so I'm not sure I see any particular advantage in having a 'scheme' for just the password element. Not necessarily. I have been using Keepass for a long time and would recommend it. KeeFox helps a great deal when using Firefox and simplifies things a great deal.
I don't use those phone things but if those above say it's possible then I'm not going to argue.0 -
Can anyone tell me how to download keepass droid and how it works?0

Another option - install Firefox browser (free) onto your Android phone. This has a professional style password manager built in, where you protect your site passwords behind a master password. Only catch is, no easy way to import or sync them. So just add the ones to the sites you use most manually.0

For the Desktop Firefox just get the add on "Password exporter"
https://github.com/fligtar/password-exporter/wiki/
It's a small plugin that you can use to export and import using a simple file. (you can obfuscate usernames and passwords)
I use it to manually backup passwords and bookmarks when moving between machines.
Also Firefox and Opera browsers offer the function to sync bookmarks and passwords between devices (desktop and mobile)Laters

I have an Excel spreadsheet listing them all as I have so many passwords, varying email addresses etc and log ons etc - I have the spreadsheet password protected.0
