It's worth carrying on because, theoretically, there could have been a problem at HMRCs end. It doesn't sound like it and it depends on how good the paperwork of the employer is.

As for ruining you, can you not just rent for a period until it is sorted? I must say I am not a fan of shared ownership, there are a few developments where it works but there are many more where it doesn't.

I think you need to prepare for this purchase falling through. It's not your fault so your partner mustn't be too upset, this would have come out eventually so in a way it's good that it has now.

Shared ownership is the only way we can afford it. It's the last house in the area so only way we can.

Exactly what you have said on here....they should be able to tell her if her boss has even paid tax on her behalf.

If hmrc have no record of the boss paying tax either via your GF's name or NI number, then its more than likely it has not been paid.

If thats the case your stuffed and so is he.

Not sure I like the sound of this... Surely this can't stop a mortgage??

No tax, no proof of income. No income, mortgage can't be paid. Mortgage can't be paid, no mortgage.

That's how the banks look at it. Clearly from your point of view, having done nothing wrong, it's difficult to understand why you should be punished. Really, it's the employers fault and they can expect to be rewarded by HMRC...

I agree with Justjohn, ask your girlfriend to contact HMRC directly, and confirm the tax situation. It will probably be quicker, as HMRC can drag their feet, and you will have some peace of mind. I hope it is just a mix -up and everything will be resolved.
