Statement Of Earnings HMRC

Hi all,

My girlfriend needs to provide a statement of earnings for her new mortgage (1st mortgage) to the Mortgage supplier as she gets paid cash. She has been working at her current employment for 9 years.

When she called HMRC they said they had no record of her paying TAX. This has later come to fruition that her boss never gave her NI number to HMRC when she started and has only just come about now. She has been paying tax the entire time but they can't match her NI number to her for some (clerical error) reason.

He has been calling them every day for two weeks to clear this up so she can request her statement, but they keep fobbing him off and my girlfriend is beside herself as this is holding up out mortgage.

How long should this take to sort? I hope somebody out there knows!!

Thanks in advance for taking the time to look.

This could take months or years as it is more than possible that the employer was on the fiddle, especially if this has gone on for 9 years. I take it she never got a payslip or p60 from her employer in those 9 years?

Same as above post. Her employer needs to give her in writing what she’s earned for these 9 years, when it was paid etc. I know that for the last 7, I need to keep tax records for all my staff (I’m an employer, and only pay freelancers cash, which is normally reported to HMRC at the end of the year). If this is refused, HMRC and possibly the Police need to get involved.

Unfortunately, this is one that could take years to sort out.

Yes she has had them, though there was no NI number on both. I'm sad to hear it could take this long as we are in limbo between old flat and new home. Everything is in place for us, just this one snag.

He isn't on the fiddle that's for sure it's been a oversight on his part. DO the HMRC have anyway of marrying up my girlfriends details with her NI number? It sounds to me that it's just a matter of putting the pieces together and coming up with the details...? Trying not to sound too naive.

So if her employer gives her in writing what she’s earned for these 9 years - he has an accountant, why hasn't this been picked up by him I don't know!!! - what can we do with that information?

The employer would have submitted end of year returns, with a list of each employee, stating NI number, name, address. This was done on a form and sent in. It has recently changed and is all done online, if he did not have her NI number, he would have been asked to supply a date of birth.

Ok, yes he does this online I believe, so they will have a record of her there then. We just need to prove that she exists as the mortgage company are waiting on this to then complete the mortgage.

Without this I don't know what we can do? We have a house that is held for us and a deposit waiting to go, everything eles has been ok'd just this one snag has cropped up...

Not had to apply for a mortgage for years. Why did the mortgage company ask for this info from HMRC, wouldn't the employer supply a letter and wage slips for evidence of income? The company I work for pays people weekly in cash, and they all have a pay slip each week showing deductions.

She gets paid every two weeks in cash and always has done. She has payslips with each wage packet, naturally. However, we didn't pick up that there is no NI number on the wage slips and her p60's.

So the mortgage company have asked for a statement off earnings from the HMRC to show she has been paying TAX. It shows on her wage slips that she has been, and we have sent the payslips to the financial advisers who forwarded them on.

This is not going to end well.

I daresay the employer is not actually chasing HMRC because he is on the hook for a fine and or jail time. Your partner has done nothing wrong but will probably be looking for a new job soon.

You cannot overlook something like this for 9 years...

Seriously???... How will this affect our mortgage application? This could ruin us as it's a shared ownership the only way we could get a house...
