Hi guys, need opinions here pls.
Our Hotpoint dishwasher has given 13 years of good service. Over the last few weeks, I've noticed it sounds different when it's washing sometimes, but it has washed the dishes so I've just carried on.
Today it hasn't washed them properly, the spray arm on the upper basket has broken a bit, and won't spin round when washing. Now, that is only a bit of plastic, but the price for a replacement is £51
I don't think this is anything to do with the change in noise recently, so I'm anticipating that we'll pay £51, and summink else will go wrong in the near future. Basically I doubt the wisdom of spending £50 on a 13 year old machine, especially as I've seen a Bosch Classixx for less than £300.
EXCEPT I don't have £300 to hand at the moment - my son would like to go on a school trip next year (we want him to be able to go too), and we have to pay a deposit for that next week, and save up for the rest over the next 9 months.
Soooo - Spend £51 and hope, or put £300 on the credit card ....

Have you son do the washing up until you have saved enough for both his trip and a new dishwasher?0
-
Have you had a look on ebay for the part? Might be worth a try and a lot less than £51!0
-
Is there any reason that you can't wash dishes in a bowl with hot water and washing up liquid it would be so much cheaper than going into debt?0

go to egypt with a couple of camels and you can buy a 13 year old dishwasher , she will also clean the house if you ask nicely
seriously if you son wants to go on a school trip maybe he could earn money towards it by washing up for you

You haven't said which model, but they generally seem to be under £20 on eBay.0

Probably buy the part if the dishwasher was still in good nick elsewhere. They don't have as many moving parts as a washing machine so theoretically there's less to go wrong.
I've bought some new interior bits and bobs for mine over the years (runners and little wheels for the racks, plus a cutlery basket) as plastic can go brittle with age, which may be what's happened with your spray arm.
Have you tried shopping around to see if you can get the part cheaper? There are a few domestic appliance spares sellers on ebay, or try googling the machine model and name of the part.0

Buy a second hand dishwasher for £50. Or get your son to do the dishes as above. You're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0

 Because
1 ) as full-time working mother and father, and an intelligent 12 year old boy, I believe life should be more fun than standing at a sink up to the elbows in hot water and food detritus 2 or 3 times a day.
 2) I believe that the dishwasher makes a far better job of cleaning the plates, and especially pans and casserole dishes than washing by hand does, so it's healthier
 and
 3) I think that it is actually more cost-effective in the long-term to run a dishwasher once a day than to run multiple sinks of hot water (If I wash-up after a full sunday lunch I'll probably refill the sink 5 or 6 times, can't bear washing up in water that is murky from the previous items), and wash the teatowels etc we would use in drying dishes.
OK ?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. 0 0
