Debit card has been cloned.

We bank with the Halifax and are very on the ball with checking the bank account. This morning I spot what appears to be a US castpoint transaction and a charge of £1.50 directly above it.
Been on the phone to the Halifax and hubby's card has been cloned. There are other US transactions pending, amounting to just over £100 total.
They have cancelled the card and ordered a new one. They have refunded the transaction that went out this morning and will refund the other ones in due course. Apparently I will need to look out for a letter with the a list of the items and sign and send it back.
It's a joint account and we have a card each. I only tend to use mine in the same places, such as Asda etc, but hubby has used his in petrol stations etc in the past, the Halifax representative said it could have come from one of those.
Has anyone had this happen to them? I am soooo annoyed. Luckily, we've managed to put a stop to it before they took a lot more of us. I know a lot of people don't bother to keep a track of their account, so things like these get missed.

It's very common these days, the only way to prevent it is to stop using cards and pay cash.0

Yes, this happened to my OH about 3 weeks ago. Someone tried to take money out in Argentina on a cloned card but thankfully the bank declined it! We think it was copied in a petrol station as well....0

Yes, but that would still mean having to draw the money out of the cashpoint. Should we be careful which cashpoints we use, or are these devices rare on cashpoints?Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £30,358.130 -
It's better to use a credit card when paying for things, that way it's the bank's money that gets taken not yours. While it can happen at an ATM there would nearly always have to be some tampering with the machine which you should be able to spot, petrol stations on the other hand just need a camera in the ceiling to watch your PIN being entered, I'm pretty sure that's what happened to me when my credit card account suddenly started to show ATM withdawals in Australia.0

Cash over the counter ?
Whether you use a debit or credit card, if this happens to you, you will be refunded in full. It's easy for the bank to tell whether it's a genuine or counterfeit card which has been used.0 -

Fraud happens. It's a pain in the backside but it's the bank who are the victim. You are merely an inconvenienced pawn in the game.
So while it's not nice, push the bank to put things right and then get on with life.
I've seen all sorts of fraud over the years.
Impersonation at the counter.
ATM with a stolen card.
Debit card in a shop.
Debit card online.
Direct debit fraud.
Online account hacked.
Staff fraud.
The list goes on. The bank loses. You don't.0 -
My cash over the counter comment wasn't meant to be taken seriously ! Should have added a smiley
People do seem to get their knickers in a twist about fraud, i know it's not nice but it's not the end of the world.0 -

You could then always say you prefer to use the counter to having your card cloned :eek:0 -
About 12 years ago I had my credit card cloned and the cheeky !!!!!!s were using it for filling up Truck's diesel tanks at various filling stations. I was contacted by the Police who asked me if I minded giving a witness statement and possibly giving evidence in court. I was happy to do this but the thieving git pleaded guilty before I was asked to go in the court room.
Seems it was an organised gang who were making a mint out of offering to fill up the tanks of these trucks for half-price, they had cloned an awful lot of cards and used them in the early versions of pay-at-the-pump they used mainly at Tesco forecourts.
The credit card company refunded my account, issued a new card with different number but kept the old card open for a few days to enable police to catch him in the act.0
