is S&P500 good for an index tracker
    pound/cost ave in longterm

It can form a good core, but I'd also include UK (All share?) to reduce currency risk and then add some Asian, EM or global exposure.

Or just go for an "all in one" such as Vanguard LifeStrategy?

    Only if profitability is maintained.

Good point, and I think for most companies there is little chance of that.
They are currently benefiting from being able to borrow ultra cheap money, but Governments won't get away with robbing savers for ever.
Miners and oil companies look particularly cheap, but then a fall in commodity prices looks likely to hit them as well as an increase in interest rates.
But then again as gadgetmind says, much of the bad news is already priced in.
British Utility shares look safest, but they have not fallen with the rest of the market.
Traditionally they fall around the 5 year review by the Regulator, the companies putting on a PR show squealing about how tough the Regulator is
Then the shares start rising a few months after the review when investors realize the Regulator has given them an easy ride as usual

Most companies have taken the same opportunity to de-gear that private individuals have. And governments ... haven't!

Isn't that what we want from a share? :D

:naughty: Not when I'm waiting to buy them

I'm waiting until the next review is due when we get the usual PR b*llocks pretending the Regulator is setting tough new targets so I can buy Utility shares when they are low

I do understand, and even once said on the MF forums that I hadn't bought any NG as the price refused to fall. I was told off for being the kind of bloke that expects women to behave one way before meeting him and *very* different afterwards. :D

Well, good luck. My only real attempts at market timing are buying on the "bad hair" days when nearly everything gets flogged. Despite the debatably low markets right now, we haven't had such a day yet this year IMO.

China and Brazil are slowing. Only growth in US is Mitt Romney's speeches on the economy.

Are we heading for a dip back to the 4000 level?

on one hand my inital instinct is to kinda hope not as i've just put a large lump sum into the market by way of 5 trackers in a longterm buy and hold but equally if we do get a big slump then i'd just use it to buy a whole lot more!

That's not the only way for you to gain: those trackers will be generating internal dividends that are re-invested, and lower prices mean that they'll buy more of the underlying equities.
