I sure am! Thanks very much!

One other issue though. At some stage in this process my avast antivirus stuff stopped working. When I click "fix now", nothing happens, same when I click "enable all shields". Any ideas?

Avast is not my forte. I could only suggest uninstalling and re-installing from scratch. If that fails, start a new thread and I'm sure help won't be far away.

Avast removal tool > http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Download aswclear.exe on your desktop
Start Windows in Safe Mode
Open (execute) the uninstall utility
If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
Click REMOVE
Restart your computer

+1 for the above. Some of the latest updates for avast have seem to have been rushed out and can have this effect. Download new version from here, choose to save it to desktop, then remove the currently-installed version as per figment's post above, reboot, and then run the new installer.
