My internet is ok as I'm here, but have lost the local station I was listening to, so am now listening again to another show.
Could it be due to adverse weather conditions, I gather we may be in for storms!

quich search gives the following:-
IP address 192.168.1.1
default username/password are admin and admin
The GUI looks reasonably straightforward

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Well done to Gunjack for finding this.
Once you have the ethernet cable sign into the router with admin/admin as indicated.
You will then see the GUI - http://freeola.com/support/connections-adsl-safecom.html
Note the router settings eg most ISPs use PPPOA (AOL is PPPOE & an MTU of 1400) - don't forget to "apply" any changes.
Once configured, have a look under the "status" tab; at the very least it should tell you if the broadband connection is active, and secondly indicate if the internet connection (ie ISP username/password) is accepted & working.
If not then call yoir ISP technical support - as I said earlier you may do all the above, and still find that it isn't working, which would imply that you have either a faulty router or a line issue. No doubt someone will point out that the microfilter (white box plugged into the phone line) may also cause a problem and should also be swapped out. It is difficult to identify whether it is a line or router problem, you can only check this by temporarily swapping the router for another.
You said your local shop wasn't very helpful, there will be many other technical people around advertising their services, or even a friend who has an old router hanging around, but any independent technician will have a spare router and check it out for £20 - I would if it was local.0 -
Ok, getting the ether cable thing today from a mate. So that will bypass the security issue? And hopefully allow me into the router? Well, fingers crossed I'll be back tonight...
cheers!And if, you know, your history...0 -
Ethernet cable.
Connecting that requires no security-you just log into the router, if the default has been changed then do a factory reset to get you in.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Ok, I'm online via the cable but still having problems with the router. from speaking to the isp help they reckon the router has been reset to factory security so I need that password Doesn't sound right to me but what do I know (f all!)? Any ideas? Thanks again.
2 other things..
1) My avast protection seems to have been disabled and I cant get it back
2) If the router was back to factory securoity that's no security isn't it?
Right, off to bed and then away for the weekend so will bump the thread on sunday when i'm around. If anyone wants to break in whilst I'm away that's fine if you sort the laptop (it will be upstairs in the spare room). And if, you know, your history...0 -

Apologies...answers in blue below. About to get in bath so will provide any further info in a bit. Thanks.Back to your original questions:
Yes it is possible to access the router without an internet connection. Basically there's one connection between computer and router (the LAN - this is your wireless connection) and another connection between the router and the internet (the WAN). If either connection is not working, you will not be able to access the internet. If the WAN connection is down but the LAN connection is working, you can access the router but not the internet.
If you reset the router (i.e. back to factory settings) then you would have erased all settings that may have been previously entered. If you only rebooted it (power off / power on) then the settings should have been preserved.
If the only thing you've changed is the wireless security, your laptop should (may) warn you that it's an insecure connection, but you should be able to over-ride this and connect anyway (NOT ideal long-term, but fine whilst the problem is sorted). However, as has been mentioned before, temporarily connecting with an ethernet cable is a much better way to resolve any problems.
Who is your internet service provider? Madasafish/plusnet
Is it ADSL (router connected to a telephone point via a microfilter) or cable (router connected to a thick coax lead)? Don't fully understand. The router has a lead that goes to a small box near the phone socket if that helps, the box says "BT ADSL"
What is the make and model number of the router? safecom,swart2-54125 I think (that's what it says the network is, the router itself doesn't have the model on and box/manual seem to be lost)
What LEDs are there on the front of the router, and what is each of them doing (on/flashing/flickering/off) ? There are powers, adsl, wlan and then four lan leds. Now i'm via the ethernet 1 lan and all the others are lit. I think before it was just the three and no lan.
To go forward and get this resolved quickly, buy (no more than a couple of quid from a Local computer shop. More expensive at the big name stores) or borrow an ethernet cable, which will allow access to the router.
Provide the answers to these questions and I'll try to help you further. And if, you know, your history...0
