I really would recommend going somewhere for fitting. I measured myself and was buying 40dd for ages, but they never seemed quite right. Got measured and i am a 36g!! My shape looks so much nicer now and my clothes fit better. It really does make a massive difference.

Try looking at M&S online - they have a bra sizing guide on their site. Used it recently and changed the size I was wearing and I've got a much more comfortable fit now. They also show you which of their bras they do in your size - useful if you are an odd size/cup combo like me!

I agree with abbecer, the official method of working out your size very rarely actually leads to a bra which fits.

If you get fitted professionally - in a specialist shop such as Bravissimo, Rigby & Peller or an independent fitter, NOT NOT NOT in M&S or a department store - it is rare that you will see them use a tape measure at all. They will assess your size based just on looking at your breasts, and looking at the bra you are currently wearing, and will then go and find you a selection of bras in the size they think you are. These are almost always much bigger in the cup & much smaller in the back than you will come out as on a standard measurement chart.

I used to wear a 34DD based on standard measurements and wondered why nothing ever fitted. I now wear a 32G. I took my mum to Bravissimo at the weekend and she went from a 34D to a 32FF.

Edit: M&S is particularly bad in its sizing, as it is non standard - for example there is no such thing as a FF cup in M&S, it goes straight from F to G!

If you go to a specialist shop they WILL need to take a look, as they most likely won't be measuring you at all - they do it all on sight!

There is really no need to be shy, but is there any way you could wear some kind of bra to help them out?

I'm sure bra fitting specialists are well used to dealing with customers with body confidence problems and will know the best ways of putting you at ease/not scaring you too much :D

thanks bargin rzl.......i will be going to swansea.....so i know there is a place in the arcade...... called madame fauna's sp? .......

its been there for years........i was thinking.... if i get a bra....a proper one ...lol..... that it might make me look a bit thinner round the bola...( stomach)......

or thinking about it.. maybe i should get one of those all in one things.. where all the fat gets pushed behind my ears....lol.....

seriously though...... as i havent bought a bra for years.....and havent worn one in a very long time.... the one that i was wearing was not fitting proerly... stretched....as it was too small.....

so maybe it will be money well spent... as the above place is not cheap.. going by what i have heard peeps saying.... but they suposed to have really nice under wear.. the type of place a guy goes to to buy some bedroom gear for his oh if you know what i mean;)

    That'd be this place then

    http://www.foner.co.uk/about.shtml

I can't see anything on their site about how they do their fittings (as I already said, I have a lot more confidence in places who do their fittings visually rather than with a tape measure) but they do look like a proper place where they should know what they are doing.

Shame there aren't any branches of Bravissimo in Wales, at least then I could recommend them to you based on personal experience!

And yes, a properly fitting bra will make you look MUCH slimmer round the middle! :D

Ooooh look, found it on the Foner site:

"It's difficult to measure yourself accurately, so you could still end up buying the wrong size. Here at Madame Foner's we are specially trained to provide you with an accurate fit - and remember, we do see hundreds of boobs a day, so there's no need to be embarrassed - we are always discreet, professional and will work hard to put you at ease."

  • I also recommend going for a fitting. I was wearing a 42B for ages and I'm actually a 38D! I had my fitting in Debenhams and was simply given different sizes to wear so the lady giving my fitting could see what looked and felt the most comfortable. I have a very large ribcage and it pushes my boobs apart, so I look smaller than I actually am - wearing the right size was like a revelation!

I have a hunch that the traditional ways of measuring bra sizes might be a little off now - the best thing is what's comfortable. The main thing to worry about is whether the bra sits flat under your boobs or tries to ride up - if the latter, you need a bigger size. Also, whether the underwire supports/goes round the entire breast or whether it digs in - if the latter, you need a bigger cup.
There's mush in my clock slot.
