Careful, not too much. Yeast is used in fermentation and the by product is carbon dioxide. You could end up with a very swollen and uncomfortable !!!!! and I'm not talking about Mrs Slocombes either...

Right, i have done lots of thinking, and rectified some of the easier stuff right away.
given the milkman a dear john letter, asked my daughter for more money, reduced expected groceries spend, reduced clothing spend, reduced presents spend to less than half, cut out entertainment (since i am not sure what it included), cut out holiday, reduced toiletries spend to feminine + £10, unfortunately my estimate for tobacco was underweight, so this has added £16 (planted seed for hubby to think about giving up), reduced household maintenance to £10 (have to monitor this, may need to be more depending on what it was spent on), reduced drinks spend (not got rid of since its the only entertainment we will have!) to 1 bottle wine and 4 bottles beer a week. havent touched pet food yet as i need to do some comparisons. lots i havent looked at but i need to monitor more closely so there are more savings to be made i am sure. So below please find my NEW SOA!
next thing to tackle will be the credit cards, going to see if i can transfer some balances to the 0% ones and see what we are left with.
as an illustration - this is the kind of financial luck i have - yesterday Hubby sent out quite a big invoice of £850, i did some calculating and realised that we may have a couple of hundred left over that i could put to one side for his minor business expences untill the next invoice, so i could cut up the card he is using.
now we get an MOT and garage bill for his van totalling £360!
I can't win - every time i try to put some money aside this sort of thing happens
anyway, on to the new SOA. i am going to be monitoring everything carefully to see what other changes can be made. And find out how my elec/gas is split.

There you go...£145 to play with, closer to £200 if you can get your other half to do the decent thing. Essentially, he gives up smoking or you threaten to cut his dinners by half because he's basically spending 1/4 of a months food on his habit. I know that this sounds sanctimonious but the truth is, either he earns more, you spend less or he gives up smoking. In this situation, smoking is frankly being antisocial and disloyal to the family despite what he may think. It's that simple. Otherwise, you seem to have things under control as much as any of us have. Slowly and surely things will start to ease over the next few years, but unfortunately you have a ways to go before being truly free.

Good luck and keep going. Remember to tell us how you're getting on from time to time.

well I can't really force him, if he is going to give up then he has to decide himself - i don't know whether you have ever smoked but i have not so i have no idea how difficult it is to give up - i am not sure threatening is the way to go. it might be antisocial (which i agree with, I don't like it) but he is my husband and nagging can only go so far before it becomes counter-productive - it will have to appear to be his idea

thanks for the support anyway, will keep you posted as to how i am getting on - next - those pesky credit cards. . . .

I'm a smoker...or was until recently. I understand about the nagging, but men (at least, mine is) are simple creatures and sometimes they need it spelt out in hard black and white. You can't afford his habit and either he earns more to cover the loss or it takes longer to get out of hell. However, 70% of smokers find it hard to quit, so perhaps another approach is in order. He's addicted to nicotine, what if you could provide the nicotine for half the cost of tobacco? You can, patches from EBay are £25ish per 4 weeks. Its not giving up, he still gets his fix, but it's a damned site cheaper than right now. Who knows, after a few weeks, when he tries to smoke again, he might find he really doesn't like the taste any more and gives up by default. Alternatively, ask him to try it for a while, for the sake of the family, see how he gets on...etc...you know how to word it.

Hi. I strongly suggest you do a budget for the business. I'd be surprised if it was bringing in as much money as you think. Even it's just a brief SOA to start with (you can ammend it as you go along):
    eg
    Income 1463
Tax for tax man and Ni 438.90
    Petrol?
    Tax?
    Mot?
    Parking?
    Servicing/repairs to vehicle?
    Savings for new vehicle?
    Finance for new vehicle?
    Loans?Credit cards?
    Tools of trade?
    Materials?
    Insurance for trade?
    Trade publications?
    Accountant fees etc.
Also if you can workout which debts belong to which category (home or business -certainly with any soley business ones).

The sooner you get the business expenses and household expenses seperated the better (not least because you can claim tax relief against some of the business expenses etc).

Regarding your 'luck'with the business expenses- this is just bad planning in operation. You'd still have the 360 garage fee to pay, just be thankful that you'd identified a couple of hundred pounds 'spare' or it could have felt a lot worse. Plan for every bill possible soyou arenot caught out.
    Best of Luck
