Buying for our baby (due oct)

Options
Hello!

My partner and I are super excited to be expecting a baby in October this year and now we've reached 14 weeks we've finally allowed ourselves to start shopping. So far we have bought:

a moses basket
A couple of sleep suits and vests
Some scratch mits
Some little woolly boots

We're struggling to buy any more clothes until we find out the sex as everything is so girl/boy in design, so hopefully that's just a few weeks away.

So apart from the big stuff (cot, bouncer, pram, car seat etc) what are we likely to forget about the we'll really need? What couldn't you live without, and what was a complete waste of money?

Thanks :T

  • I know it sounds daft but bottles, teats and a steriliser. When my wife was due home with our first I didn't even know I was meant to have sterilised bottles and put water in them. Also they change the way the way you make up the milk every few months. On our first it was make it and chill it. On the second it was add the milk at the last minute.
This is assuming you don't breastfeed. My wife wasn't able to due to medical reasons.

Also little hats to wear in the moses basket.

You probably know all ths but its just little things that are easily overlooked.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ramada/Days Inn BRG thread.

This has been done to death on here. Seriously, there are huge threads answering the same questions. Try the search function ^^^^^^^^^^^^.

Sorry Mildred, I don't have the luxury of the search function as I'm not on a computer or laptop

I had an October baby (now almost 18 months old - eek!)

We didn't have a moses basket, never used scratch mitts, she wore a hat once (coming home from hospital). She never wore a vest under a babygrow (or whatever), she wore one of the seven cardigans my nan knitted for her twice. She wore babygros almost exclusively for the first 5 months. She was overdue, has always been perfectly healthy, but has always been smaller than clothes in her size (only went into 12-18 month clothes about 4 weeks ago). Lots of outfits people bought her in the early days never got worn because they were for the wrong season by the time she was the right size for them. She's had 4 or 5 completely explosive nappies in the whole 18 months. She's only ever been sick twice.

I tell you all this because they really are all different, and until they're here, you don't have a clue how they'll be, or what they'll be like. So don't go mad. Shops are open 24/7 these days, and there's not much you have to have before they arrive.

I'm not on an iPhone. I'm on a HP touch pad, and the search option doesn't allow you to type anything in - it never has done since I bought it

    muslin cloths (lots)
hooded towels for baby bath and erm an acutal baby bath
a gro-egg or some other room thermometer as babies cant regulate their body temp
gro-bag or other generic sleeping bag as baby will kick off sheets and blankets :-)
Music, e.g 'wheels on the bus'
As a previous poster said bottles/formula (Aptimil) and steriliser.

    Congratulations :-)

ps - babies are also very fond of cuddles which are free!

Thanks Brazilian. I'm thinking layers will help with him/her being a winter baby, but hoping not to go overboard and waste money!

Ever likely breastfeeding rates are so low with that sort of advice at 14 weeks!:eek:
