Seller has added £2 to postage costs after auction ends.

I bid on a jumper for my son and won it for £15 with £3 postage. I received the invoice moments later and the postage had risen to £5. I pointed this out to the seller who told me that they had now weighed the jumper and the postage is now £5. I know I am not going to pay the extra as it was never mentioned or agreed, but what course of action do I take with ebay. Is this an item "not as described" or shall I wait for him/her to file a NPB notice on me and contest that?

  • Firstly, I would email the seller and say that the postage costs detailed on the listing clearly stated £3 and that is the cost that you agreed to pay when you bid on the auction.

I did contact the seller as soon as I saw the £3 postage had risen to £5. This is how the saga has unfolded so far.

    I messaged him/her saying:
Hello. I have bid on and won the Duck and cover hooded top. My winning bid was £15 and the postage on the item page was £3, making a total of £18. However, when I try to pay, the postage cost appears as £5 and the total £20. Can you please send me a revised invoice for the £18 and I will make the payment straight away. Many thanks.

    He/she replied:
hi i only accept postal orders or cheques or cash, i do not accept paypal, and when checking the weight on the jumper the cost is going to be £5.

    cheers tilly

    I messaged him/her saying:
Hi again. The auction states postage is £3, twice. Where does it say postage is £5 anywhere in the auction?

    He/she replied:
sorry it does not state this in my listings but after checking with the post office today that is the cost.

    Go figure.

Pay the correct price. If they don't like it they can refund you. At least if they try to open a NPB dispute you can prove you did pay in full.

  • I agree with Fay. Pay just the £18.

Send another email to the buyer saying that you will be sending payment of £18.

There is also a sub plot to this. Straight after winning the auction I had a message from a third party saying:
Sorry to bother you but could you please tell me if the top you've just won from sillytilly1972 is from a seller called maria or john bond.Thankyou, H.

My final message to the seller was to ask for the address to post payment(simply so I had their address). Sure enough, they wanted payment making out to M Bond, previously known as djjonbond.

I'm thinking of contacting him/her and telling him/her that I have unilaterally decided that the top is now only worth £5 and I would like it hand delivered to save the postage cost. I see no difference between this and what he is attempting.

This saga is unfolding in real time, so I'll keep you posted.
  • You could always contact Ebay and see what they advise.
  • Hi,

I've just looked up tilly1972 here:
    http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=sillytilly1972

I'd suggest you take some basic precautions when buying from E-Bay, such as

1.Check for feedback and make sure you know and understand how the system works. This seller has no experience of selling or buying on ebay, hence the zero feedback.

    2. Use Paypal. Paying by cheque or postal order will make it nigh on impossible to get your cash back in any dispute. This seller doesn't accept paypal.

I'm very much an ebay newbie myself: I've bought and sold a couple few items for a couple of quid each to both learn how feedback and the whole system works. I'd be upset if I lost £18 just because I didn't understand the system.

I would not post a cheque to this seller.

    Good luck!

Hi ozvaldhino. The point is this seller is/was djjonbond.....a very experienced seller who has aquired umpteen negs in the past month. Sending a cheque for £18 would be financial folly. The seller would cash the cheque and leave me high and dry for the item. Getting that money back would be near impossible as it wasn't through paypal.

If i send a cheque for the full amount requested, I've been swindled.
If I send a cheque for the £18 he won't send the item and I'll be swindled.
If I send nothing, I get hit with a NPB notice and neg feedback.

    Decisions, decisions.

    Edit.

    I messaged him/her with this:
Hi Maria. I've decided that I only wish to pay £5 for the top and I would like free postage. Let me know what you think.

    They replied:
excuse me£5 for the top? your jokeing i paid £65 for this to 2 weeks ago from envy and its only been worn by my son twice, its just a shame he wont stop growing.

then another from them soon after saying:
hi if you do not want this item then let me please know, and feedback will be left, but how on earth can you ask for this to be sold for £5 when you clearly bidded £15 for this, is this some sort of joke? please do ot waste my time.

My final message to them was:
I wanted the item at the advertised price. You decided to add £2. If you can decided to add £s for no good reason, why do you not think I can decided to take off a few pounds. You are a scammer and threatening me with neg feedback has just secured your own.

I have now posted a neg for this muppet but it isn't showing up straight away like positives do. Is this usual?

    Hi again,

Did you not see djjonbond's 15 negs in the last month? Why risk getting into a squabble with someone who has clearly lost the plot.

His feedback is private, so you can't see what other problems buyers have had with him. I would never buy from someone with private feedback. Was it like that when you made your bid?

    Oz.
