LAZER Eye surgery

Had my consultation today at optical express. I am very shortsighted @minus 7 in one and minus 8 other. They said I was suitable for lazer surgery and my quote was £2800 for basic lasek treatment and £4600 for the wavefront customised intralase treatment ( lasik )which is supposed to aid quicker recovery and be more precise at correcting minor defaults . The price was a shock but I had a half price voucher (which they emailed me ) so I can have the more advanced surgery for £2295. So I am having it done in June. The optometrist did stress that there was a high possibility that because I am 46 I may still need to have reading glasses for close up work, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of having it done especially as i hate wearing my glasses. However my job does not require using computers so I am ok with the prospect of having to pop on a pair of mild specs to read the paper in my old age at least they wont be an inch thick anymore !0

Just updating.... had my op yesterday.. it really does not hurt, just a bit of pressure on eye ball for about 15 secs and all in all its all done in 15 minutes! Went back for my check up today and they said 20/20 vision already ! AMAZING ! Eyes feel a bit gritty and blood shot but I can see close up and far away no problem even though they kept saying I would need reading glasses after the op because I had such a high degree of short sightedness. So I am well chuffed.0

There is no way I would let ANY quack do anything to my eyes!!!
I will stick to wearing glasses.0 -
I'm surprised it's so expensive nowadays.
I had old-style PRK on mine back in '99 from Optimax and the standard price back then was £495 per eye. Why on earth these companies are now charging £1500+ is beyond me. I always assumed it'd get cheaper, not way more expensive as we were always being told that such treatments would become the norm and glasses would be phased out. (The consultation back then was an eye test, quick meeting with the surgeon, then me stuck in a room with a taped recording and laminated card detailing the disclaimers and potential complications. So, cheap and cheerful in that regard I guess)
Maybe the new treatments such as LASIK etc are better and inherently a lot pricier, but I was (and still am) delighted with mine.0 -
Day 5 after my laser treatment... eyes are comfortable, no soreness, dryness or even sensitivity to light ( not that theres been much bright sunshine about anyway lately)0

Hi Diceydeb, glad all is well, I had mine done about oooh coming up to 3 years now, Ultralase it was! That was my fear same age as you and the thought of having to wear glasses for reading still really put me off, but am glad to report never did need 'em!
I do however have slight sensitivity to bright lights nothing major though, and some days my vision is not as good as others bit weird really..... but made up i did it!
