I always have 2 pillowcases on our pillows, then if someone is sick, (as long as you are quick) you can get away with just changing the dirty case!!! I do then wash the pillow later, if its a full wash it does seem to be fine, but it does mean im not looking around for pillows in the middle of the night!!!!

if you have a tumble dryer, put the pillows in on low heat with a couple of tennis balls whcih fluffs them up as they are drying. same with duvets if you're taking them to the laundrette

if you take them to the laundrette, do not put the big tumbler on high!

i melted my pillow protectors, matttress protectors, and the covers of some of my pillows went a bit crunchy too

I'm sure we got by in the past without washing duvets every month :) I'm sure i haven't caught anything nasty from mine - No offence but i still think people are too hung up on over sanitising everything ( i mentioned this last week about oven cleaning) . everyone seems to be alergic to everything these days.

I agree with you on this one Graham -after all, when you see how some 'members of society' live - the filth and squalor - yet they rarely get ill. However, that's not going to stop me cleaning and washing my pillows and duvets once in a while :D

When my SIL got married, Mr TM took along her pillow, which she had used since she was 5 (had been Mr TM's previously). She had used it nightly until in her 20's and thought it had been binned. During the speeches, Mr TM revealed the pillow which was 'auctioned'. All I can say is that it was 10% feather and 90% 'other things' by the time we were shown it :silenced: SIL made sure it was binned that day :rotfl:
  • After reading this thread I realise we need new pillows.Does anyone know where to get them cheap(not feather)?

Sorry to go off topic but it is one of my (very few) things that i will rant about

    Cheers

to each their own graham but if you saw my house you'd know i'm not a neat freak! in fact i pride myself on my family's overall strong constitution due to this fact

we're actually a bit of slobs BUT i don't like the idea of sleeping on something that full of beasties, body oils and sweat

same thing with baths. if i take a bath i ALWAYS rinse off with a quick shower afterwards, otherwise your just laying around in the filth you're trying to wash off _pale_

The duvets in this house are Hungarian or Siberian goose down (depending on which bed) as I can't bear synthetic fibres of any sort. Pillows are Dunlopillow latex ones so don't collect beasties. Same with the bed - latex doesn't collect bed mites and only needs airing each day. So, windows open, duvets pulled back to window and bed gets a real good airing. It's the moist warm conditions which allow bed mites to prosper - make the air cold and dry and they just shrivel and die.

Hollowfibre is so horrible to sleep under/next too - makes me sweat and become unbearably hot - the natural stuff is light but insulating and follows the contours of the body, so no cold spots. The latex bed is warm too and has totally removed the need for any electric blanket or hot water bottle. And so comfortable too. Oh, and we have just moved to the continental system of single duvets each. What bliss! No more fighting over the covers and no 'bridges' in the duvet.

So.. no monthly wash of duvet or melting of duvet but I can see the need to have to do something with synthetic materials.

i bought new pillows at ikea - £1.79 each, then protector zip up things for £1.29 each (just on the off chance of a vomit related incident!). they may not be the best you can get, but at that price, you can't really complain.
