Have read through this thread feeling sick & sicker... just wish it would put me off food!!

I think the only food problem I have personally experienced was a sharp bone in chicken nuggets on a flight. (my son's food) Stupid me gave it to one of the carbin crew and never heard another thing. My son could have seriously choked on it, wish I had done more about it.

I found a bug in a pack of pre packed fruit (melon and grapes) from Tesco. They refunded me and sent me a £5 voucher.

    Yuck!

I forgot to update this the other day when I received a letter from Discovery Foods:

"Further to my telephone call, we have now received a full report from our manufacturers.

On examination under microscope the foreign body has been identified as a fibrous, slightly sticky lump up of seasoning, oil and minerals and not an insect as originally thought. This has occurred due to a build up of these materials from the machine which has then dislodged and fallen into the packet. This should have been spotted by the procuction personnel and rejected, however it appears that on this occasion it has passed through undetected. The matter has been brought to the attention of the production management and due to the seriousness of the complaint it is to be included at the next production management meeting. We have not received any similar complaints and believe this to be an isolated incident.

I have enclosed a photograph for your interest and if you would like to see more which were taken under the microscope I can forward these to you, either by e-mail or the post.

Please be assured that at Discovery Foods, every possible care is taken in the manufacture of our products. We wish to express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and distress that this must have caused you and your family form this purchase and hope that you will accept the enclosed as a gesture of our goodwill.

If we can be of any further assistance, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Yours sincerely

Not a bad result there pink. At least they appear to have conducted a proper investigation, and their apology seems sincere.

i have had foreign bodies in food stuff twice... and both times it was cadbury's chocolate bars.

    1. was a cadbury's fruit and nut...bit in to it and nearly broke my teeth on a branch...well ok a twig but it was a thick twig, i sent it back and received a letter saying it was from the raisins and was sent a £10 gift voucher.

    2. was a cadbury's whole nut (no i didnt learn! lol) i bit in to it and tried to bite through what i thought was a nut but couldn't... pulled it out of my mouth and it was a piece of hard white plastic about half the size of my thumb. apparently it had snapped off the inside of one of the machines, was sent £15 gift voucher.

and yes.... i STILL eat cadbury's... ha ha ha you never know what you'll find as an added bonus!!

  • Perhaps it's just me but when you consider a production line and food that is made in a factory it seems inevitable that some food will be contaminated with foreign objects.

I can understand making a big fuss about serious stuff like lumps of plastic in chocolate etc but when it's an insect in some fruit!?

I mean, it's fruit! We all know insects eat fruit and it's a natural product, it's only common sense that some fruit will have insects in it.

That's why when choosing loose produce you inspect for signs of insect damage etc.
    Perhaps I'm just less fussy...

Right so what do you want then ???????
Do you want £10 or £15 in vouchers for something that you paid about 45p for or do you want to go down the Enviromental Health route ???
Cos you cant go down both.........
