Nationalism is the idea that a country sets out its policy in the best interests of that country, it trades within its bests interests, it only ever goes to war if its interests are at stake or threat.
.
Oh if that were the only dimension to Nationalism. What affects the shores of other countries ultimately has an impact on us in one way or another.
Nationalism can also be ugly. Remember what Albert Einstein said::
"Nationalism is the measles of mankind; it is a childish disease"

Time and time again I hear the economic benefits of mass immigration as being a good enough reason, and there is an argument for that.
But the only concern to most people, usually just average people, is if it has brought to the UK a better quality of life to those who are/were already here.
Most would say No!!
It is all very well people coming here to make money and to better themselves, and there is no problem with anyone doing that.
But I personally am here to stay come what may, good or bad, if this country were to enter a conflict that it had little chance of winning I would stay to the end, can all these immigrants say the same.
How many are going to up sticks and just leave once the UK has been trashed, how many would go back to Eastern Europe if they started to boom.
It is not all about money0 -

Well I don't know about anyone else but I'm humming the dambusters theme with a tear in my eye.0 -

I think you've made another false assumption here. The vast majority of immigrants are hard-working and 'patriotic', i.e. they recognise the benefits of living in this country and they would fight to protect it.
There are, of course, many many exceptions; There will be many immigrants who hate this country - just like there will be many British people who hate this country."Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship." - Benjamin Franklin0 -

Surely, that is only the case if there is a shortage of labour, which is clearly not the case in the UK at this time.0 -
I would say that we are becoming low skilled workplace because we are as a society are becoming to lazy to do hard-work; we are gladly demanding from others (government etc). The entitlement culture is what generated 3 million plus unemployed. The same entitlement culture stops our children from working hard on their education, they want it easy and they are given things to easy, they do not work hard to learn maths and science(to become innovators and engineers), is to difficult....... they rather learn how to sell things becoming estate agents
On a quick pass I noticed 12 spelling or grammar issues in this post. Your profile states that your a 36 year old teacher in the UK. Perhaps you should look at what needs improving closer to home before you criticise students today for being too lazy to learn?
You mention a number of things which I would agree with. However combining those views with broad brushstroke criticism of the young doesn't help make those points. I know many recent university graduates who have spent months, or longer, actively looking for work. If they apply for shelf stacking jobs they are rejected because they're more likely to leave than less qualified alternatives. We've stuffed the country up enough that the young today are the first generation is living memory that may have a lower quality of life than their parents.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Just like the 195,000 Polish under British command in World War 2 then.
And not forgetting our Commonwealth Army who numbered almost 1,000,000 non-British by 1944.
But of course, don't let facts get in the way of xenophobia.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!

Are you saying that we should only allow immigrants from countries that supported us in wars?0 -
It's "you're".
Touche I knew the universal rule of criticising someone else's writing would get me in the end. However, I hope it does not detract from the underlying argument. Someone who's posts look like they were written by a Nigerian scammer probably shouldn't be knocking the ability of those they are supposed to be teaching
