If the police can not identify the vehicle to the correct keeper, they have to give it back to you and it can be re-registered.
    Keep on at them.

Thats a good point but dont they auction off alot of stuff. Check the local auction house, usually its a regular thing

Only if they can prove its stolen. If they can't they'll have to return it.

There is less chance of that happening there days as not many change the ecu. A trip to a main dealer will find the true identity.

every car i get in i interrogate the ecu looking for any old fault codes but just as importantly i can read the chassis number from the ecu too
so if ecu is different then i know its been messed with
it goes back to using a trusted local dealer doesnt it whos traded for over 30 years and most of them from the same location, you can see them because all the locals pip as they pass,i sold my 6th car into the same family last week over a 25 year period now that is some pedigree

    i said local established emporiums
not itinerant run with faces at the front and 10 flags up
proper run places by the same family who care about reputation and service
theres plenty out there they might cost more than a stolen car or auction fodder but you get real back up if theres a problem
remember cars are washing machines with wheels, expect the unexpected

one day when your local place has shut and you get ripped you will be on here moaning

use them or lose them is my motto for my area

    keep your money local

buy cars from dealers who will give you a receipt. you won't need to do hpi checks on cars bought from legit dealers because they do the checks themselves.

Best security is a full service record, and logbook. It's very rare for someone to steal a vehicle and the papers with it. A full service record indicates that the vehicle has been passed on from one owner to another legitimately. There should be MOT/service history which state the VIN as well.

"I believe mycarcheck are liable but they saying that a 'stolen' marker was not put on the reg and that it was just a query marker- threfore i'm not covered- however surely any marker should ring alarm bells and they should have a duty to advise me as the buyer- hence me paying money for the check?! "

Surely if there is even a query marker on there they should notify you and allow you to 'make of it what you will'. I'd contact a solicitor and see where you stand, if you have any Legal expenses cover on your motor/home insurance i'd contact them also.

Do HPI give a proper guarantee. Sounds like that is the main point of paying

Yes (although there are a lot of conditions that have to be fulfilled).

claims will not be considered if you have paid 30% below the retail market value

Might as well go to an auction if they are going to say that. You sue the auction house but condition is always very debatable
