Refused Refund at Tesco

Thanks. The consensus seems to be that Tesco weren't being unreasonable. I am still genuinely interested in the legal position though - can stores decide when to process refunds?
In a way it's not really that different to banks etc. Their sales/credit depts may be open till 9pm but their CS desk may only open till 5 even though they are all in the same office. So although the store is trading, certain parts are shut. Does that make any sense? It's past my bedtime LOL
Tesco have a very weird system for working out staffing numbers (which, IMO, is a big part of their current woes) but that's a whole other rant

Blimey - I didn't expect such a number of hostile responses to my question.0

Thanks - your reply was not hostile. In fact, it's nice to have an intelligent response.0 -

Please.
Ah, another warm, kind and sensitive Tesco staff member. And yes, I will. Thank you.0 -

You seriously think you got 'a number of' hostile responses ?
Really ?
I wouldn't have said anyone was hostile in the slightest (apart from maybe tescobabe who was more blunt than hostile).
If you really think they were then surely a delicate flower like yourself should be under supervision when they use the Internet in case someone else is 'hostile' towards you

I know if I had made a special journey that I too would have been put out at not being able to get the refund. I imagine the person the OP spoke to was unable to give the refund and they simply didn't bother to get a colleague that could help them. It was probably just easier for them to send away the OP and ask them to come back later.
I'm surprised that so many people on here would have been so happy to accept the response of one Tesco employee and just head off home.0 -

The store won't have been fully functioning at 10:30pm. Many departments have individual opening hours (counters, pharmacy and CS desk are the ones that spring to mind) and, as staff are not multi skilled, the chances are that there was only one person in the building who could do your refund and that would have probably been the Duty Manager.
I'm not a Tesco employee by the way, at least not any more (thank god :rotfl:)
Before 24 hour opening was introduced, most Tesco stores would have closed by 10pm at the latest (and many closed earlier), so being able to shop at that time is really a bonus.
My local Sainsbury and Lidl stores close at 9pm but there's still staff inside stocking shelves etc. Should I bang on the door and get them to open up if I want a refund?0 -
