i want BT line and would ask re any charges. but the question is regarding physical installation of the line. do they only install one point or can they do wiring to second point upstairs?

secondly a stupid but related questions. Those multi handset type cordless phones that one can buy, do all of those need direct plugin to BT? thanks a lot

BT can put in more points but will charge to do so.

Most cordless telephone sets need a point for the base set but not the other sets.

As giraffe69 says, you really only need one point for the base unit of a multi-handset cordless phone. But do also have a standard phone if you go that way - it can be plugged into the single socket via an adapter - as DECT cordless units need power for the base and if there's a power outage in your house, your phones won't work, but an old cheap one will as it gets all the power it needs from the phone line.

BT will charge you at least £120 for one extension. Don't do it. Just get an independent telecoms engineer in (or any competent DIY'r)- or wire it yourself. Very simple job, 2 connections only.

thanks for your replies. unfortunately i can not put an order today.

does anyone know if BT normally charge for new lines or is it possible that can be waived if one signs up for 12 month line rental?

It's possible you have to ask. Sign up through Quidco to get some cashback to offset the cost whichever provider you choose.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

You have to sign up for 12m line rental anyway as a minimum, so no. But a longer minimum term/higher value package or tariff may reduce the cost.
But why restrict yourself to BT? Resellers such as Plusnet will install a new line for £50, almost everyone is cheaper than BT.

right, i didnt know that they would install a new line. i thought physical line installation had to be through BT and then call providers can be chosen.

The physical line install is always done by BT OR. But you can order it through BT Retail or any provider you wish-no difference.
BT OR and BT Retail are entirely separate things.

I have to ask, if there is a Virgin connection in place, WHY pay for a different line from an alternative supplier? VM used to be expensive, but currently the recent batch of BT changes have made them the dearest. Also, cable BB is far superior than ADSL, so I'd certainly think again.
