A Mac makes no difference whatsoever. The wireless connection procedure is the same.
At this point (31 posts in) I'd go and buy a £1 ethernet cable if necessary...

I have a mac will that complicate things? My nannan's is windows 7 i think

It would, as far as copying the settings is concerned.

From your earlier description, you have Virgin Cable. The virgin box will have an aerial lead plus the yellow ethernet cable, which goes to the WAN port on the back of the router. You need another ethernet cable, connected from any of the 4 LAN ports on the router to your Mac.

My nannan would have to phone and she has no idea what i'm talking about

That's easy, your gran phones up, tell's them who she is, and tell's them to speak to you.

Just thought of another way around this. Do you have a USB stick? If so, check that Nan's laptop is Windows 7. If it is follow the first part of the instructions to copy settings from her laptop to the stick.

Once you've done this part. Plug the USB stick into your MAC, open it in Finder, open the SMRTNTKY folder, then open WSETTING (it's a text file) to reveal the network key which you can copy and paste into the network connection dialogue box.

So you're suggesting to connect the Mac straight to the cable router?

Because the OP refers to 'VM' and 2 'boxes'. So reasonable to assume that one is the cable modem and one a Netgear wireless router.

if it's VM ADSL then yes....dunno about the cable connections...

If it's virgin cable, then no username or password is needed to connect router to cable modem, nor to connect cable modem to outside world.

i gave the answer in post 10 and im not a technophile
the op needs to turn off the media box where the virgin cable comes into his nans house and leave it off for 30 seconds
he connects his lan cable or ethernet cable to his computer and it will either work straight away or he will need to go to the post from dazzamc and amend it to fixed line

he could even use the yellow cable if he wanted to
