bank closing my account

Hello All,
I have had a bit of strange situation.
couple of years ago I had a letter from Loyds to close my bank. They said that they can not disclose why they have closed it . I did take it to ombudsman ( if spelt right) and it got to nowhere and i did find out why they closed it. my account was always in credit and sometime i used to get money from family for couple of grands . they even offered me a cc and over draft .
to cut the story short, it was closed.

now few years later, I had a same letter from barclays saying the same thing and mentioning that they can not open any further accounts for me . i couldn't care less but it starts to worry me why this is happening . I am not a british or eu national and don't think that will be the cause

I spoke to barclays and they said that they can not disclose any further information and have decided to close the account

any ideas why this may be happening

It sounds as though you have a CIFAS fraud marker on your record. Check their website for more details and instructions on how to challenge it if it's inaccurate

Well, there's something clearly wrong if this has happened twice with two separate banks.

Is there something financially you do that most other people do not - if you are receiving lump sums of money from abroad, they could be looking on that as possible money laundering or even smuggling.

With all due respect to yourself, have you some financial dealings with others who are involved in such practices?

Not a very helpful answer, I'm afraid, but it might suggest to you that the problem is not just with you but with the businesses or people to whom you are financially associated - your credit report will show those names if there are any.

    Thanks Dave,

I do not have any connection with criminal or smugllers . I did receive 14k toward my uni tuition fee cost but they never asked where it was coming from as I was prepared to give my dad identification documents if required.

for my barclays, I had a loan of 15k which i paid the lump sum into but then took it out

overall my credit rating from experian is 945 when checked last month so not sure why this has happened.
no call , nothing from them just a letter saying following the review of your account we are closing it

if they thing i am a smuggler or ... then they should ask not simply close. I can prove where the funds come from and the fact that they do not come from any bad source.

would they insert a record on cifs without me knowing?

As pmduk suggested above you could make a Subject Access Request to CIFAS.

would those information be not on experian credit report, it has a section called CIFAS so should see it there if there are any thing correct?

if that is the case then i shouldn't need to get the info directly from them

the only cifas data that will show is if you have a protective registration. If there is a cifas alert this wont show, as alerting you isn't the most effective way of combatting fraud if you are involved in something unusual.

Cash transactions originating from outside the EU are likely to trigger many banks internal systems to look at the account more closely.

protective registration is for people whom may been victim of identity fraud according to the website cifas.

I emailed CIFAS and they came back saying they do not hold any records

anyway cifas is to protect me if someone tries to get credit under my name, that wouldn't make an existing lender close my account would it? is should say that for my barclays, i did sent a payment of 8k from my other bank to it which was sent to another account on same night.

this was an 8k loan, it could be suspiciuos for an account that had small amount in it to suddenly have 8k but then that is me and if the want any proof or ... then they would normally contact you or block the account but why it was closed not sure
and why they can not disclose any info again make me worried

same case with loyds which after ombudsman and few month of waiting, iwas not told of any reasons

    any ideas

For this to happen twice, something is WRONG. You are the only person who can know what this 'something' is. Sit down, think hard about it and try to work it out.

Banks do not close customers accounts on a whim. Something has caused them to panic.

You say that when you took your previous case to the ombudsman you did find out why the bank closed it. Perhaps if you would like to share that information .....

i have not said that i did and after few month of back and forth ombudsman told me that the bank has the right to close the account without giving reason so think if i go down that route barclays will say the same

i honestly can not see what it can be, fair enough i am not a uk or eu national but they have a copy of my driving license and etc for my identity.
the other thing that comes to mind is with lloyds i had few big lumps sums of money around 12-15 k each time within 2 years for my tution and leaving expense which i was contacted by lloyds and explained it

with barclays, i did not use the account that often and really used it to keep my spare money in there ( few pounds)

if i knew why they closed it or was aware of something wrong i was doing then i would have not posted here

i am simply a normal customer as other people
