There is a 'walk in' hairdressers in Norwich, which costs £10 for cut & blow dry. I've been going there for years. You get whichever stylist is free, and sometimes its not exactly what I expected, but it has never been so awful as to stop me going there.
Ha ha - made me recall a visit to Supercuts. The "stylist" completely ignored what I asked for and gave me a cut/"style" that was fashionable but exactly what I told her I DID NOT WANT. grrr. Never been back there

  • I live in London now but still go home - North East England - to get my hair cut. I have a fab hairdresser who's been cutting my hair on and off for about ten years, and it's under £20! Paying more doesn't necessarily mean a better cut.

I work in a university and have my hair cut in the students union for £5. Anyone can walk in off the street if they want. I think they charge around £15 for colours. Even better the stylist and I have become really good friends.
  • RandomRainy, Enigma in Narberth is good, friendly and reasonably priced compared to many city hairdressers I have been to in the past. I think it is good to support local businesses when you can.

I hate paying too much to have my hair cut, and for the last 2 years I've been having dry cuts and paying in the region of £14 a time which is ideal for me as it's a reasonable price and I don't have to put up with the awkward conversation with the trainee lumbered with the task of washing my hair! ;)

A few weeks ago my DH had bought me vouchers for a posher salon than I usually go to but I realised that the vouchers were only enough for a wet cut; not wanting to have to pay to top up my gift so I could have a blow-dry I booked it for a Tuesday lunchtime knowing that the place would be dead and got chatting with the stylist - he ended up drying and straightening my hair because he didn't want me going back to work with wet hair and he had no other customers immediately after me to rush off to see so I got a cut and blow dry for the wet cut price! :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

I've tried the college a few times and it was cheap but always been a bit disappointed with final result, so I stay away now. I've found it's better to go for a trainee in a salon rather than at the college as they seem to be a bit more advanced (or I've just been lucky) and the atmosphere is more relaxing.

I managed to haggle £20 off my haircut and highlights recently on the basis that I was only going to be getting 1 wash and blowdry so it seemed daft to charge as though they were two separate treatments.

On another note, can anyone explain why hairdressers are so expensive?!!!
  • I have found a local salon that is willing to apply a shop bought tint. This has saved me a lot of money, I buy my preferred shade of nice n easy hair dye whenever I notice it is on offer. The salon is always busy compared to the one I used to go to so it seems to make good business sense. A cut, application to roots and blow dry is £24 (med length hair).

I haven't been for at about three years. I've recently taken to just checking and trimming off the odd split end when chatting on the phone. It's quite easy to do now that it's a few inches below my waist. Saves a fortune. I leave it to dry naturally most of the time, bar when going out in a hurry.

Someone asked me if I had extensions on. It's really weird, that people cut hair AND have extensions!

I go to Toni & Guy Academy in London for hair cuts and I dye my hair myself (no salon has the colours I want anyway and I have to dye my hair often). As my hair cut is classed as "advanced" ;) I always get the advanced class which means no beginner stylists who are afraid to move their scissors. So far I haven't been disappointed.

  • Hi, I have been cultivating a relationship with a local salon for the past 10 years now and often model for their trainees to practice on! The cuts are free as a model but the colouring still costs £12 which I think is a bit steep so I've taken to dying my own hair at home. I have to say that I have never had a poor quality cut as a model. I have been to salons in the past that make you have whatever they think you should have though, so be careful. I have also used Groupon deals in order to try out some different salons in my area but I've given that up now and gone back to where I know - much better to have a free cut which I know will be great than a cheap one which may or may not work!

    Hope you save some money!
    Happy Easter to everyone,
