Spill the beans... on cutting the cost of hairdressers

I look after my friend's son for the day in exchange for free haircuts!!0

I use a mobile hairdresser. Shes a little cheaper than a salon (approx £12 for wash cut and blow dry). Cos she uses my shampoo and conditioner, my hot water, my electricity, my coffee if we have one, and I have to clean up after shes left. What I do get is her skill at cutting with no frills which we inevitably pay for.0

Also I have no transport costs as she comes to my house.0

i started going to college for my haircuts around last summer and they always do a fab job for £8. used to put it off for months as could never afford a salon haircut.0

I have started having my hair coloured at the salon again after doing it myself at home for a while, I must admit I am resenting the cost of £50 every few weeks, I wouldn't mind if the colour lasted for longer but my grey roots show through too quickly and I think my hair felt in better condition when I coloured it myself so I may go back down the DIY route.
I do cut my own fringe inbetween visits to the salon but am wary of cutting the ends. I have fine hair which is above shoulder length. I have seen the videos on You Tube but am still wary of doing it myself. A friend of mine once tried one of the You Tube tutorials and put her hair in a ponytail and trimmed the ends but she said it came out all uneven so I am even more wary but I often find whenever I have my hair trimmed at the salon, no matter how much I say I want just the ends trimming, they end up taking off far more than I want, therefore I'd like to be more in charge of my own hair. All those of you who cut your own hair at the ends, how do you get it to work?0 -
I tried the local beauty school and left frustrated, as i do many hair dressers in this country. Women with very curly hair, and i am guessing women with afro carribean hair, are simply not well catered to my mainstream hair dressing educating and styling. Cost cutting is harder when there are so few poeple who do a good job with particular hair types.0

I have been having mine cut by mobile hairdressers for years, just due to cost and time..they used to keep me waiting ages when i went to a salon and charge me more
I pay £12 every 8-10 weeks and cut my fringe in between. I used to cut my mums and sisters hair, i have no training but just watched the hairdressers and just could cut. Always wanted to be a hairdresser though just never trained.
Saw this vid on another thread and thought could I?
Cut your own hair0 -
I am so so lucky, my step daughter is a hairdresser and she knows how to deal with my wild thick copious amounts of hair. She colours hair every few weeks and gives me a cut whenever needed.
She simply puts a homemade 'haircuts for a year' voucher in her christmas card for us all.
My best friend will only trust another hairdresser in the same town (arent we all funny with our hair and who touches it regardless of family ties?) and she pays over £50 for colour and cut  every month or so. Can not believe how much it is when you have to pay.:silenced:0 -
Can I ask the people who get their hair cut at a college, how did you find the places that do it? I've searched and searched but can't find any hairdressing schools/courses in my area even though it is quite urban0

I never darkened the doors of a hairdresser until a few days before my wedding at the age of 41!!! Instead I got my mother/sister/boyfriend/whoever could be persuaded to give it a trim - it's long and straight so not too difficult. I reckoned once that I had saved enough money in 20+ years of not going to hairdressers to pay for the deposit on my first property!
Since then I have mostly gone for Groupon/LivingSocial deals, and ignored the hairdressers' advice to get it done every 2-3 months - of course they're going to say that!0
