Deary me....McAfee is at best, average. Fact. It kills CPU performance, performs a scan, and once or twice a week, that is unresponsive for several minutes, due to the continual upgrades to the suite. What was once a OK antivirus program, has become nothing more than bloatware.

    DOH

    really need a sarcasm font!!!

i was actually agreeing with you in that i was wondering if they had paid you to say it was mediocre as i know it is one of the worst anti virus's out at the moment

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

yes thats exactly the angle I was coming from.

Looking at some of the responses that people have insanely taken the time to post this is clearly a very emotive issue for some.

    Ho hum

    its not emotive,
it just that being 'techie' and also wanting to help and also being money saving website we do not tend to like the idea of someone paying for software which is currently one of the worst at its job when you can get much better software for free

Please no posts along the lines of McAfee is rubbish, get this or that. We're happy that our PC has been fine for the past 12 months so we're happy to extend.

    Thanks for reading

OK so it's actually up meaning finished? I would have said check the comparative prices of the boxed version if it's Easter the weekend after next, but another ten or so days of being online with no AV at all isn't recommended.

Download it this year as per TakeThis's advice then compare with the boxed prices whenever there's a sale on IF McAfee allows you to add the extra time onto the end of a current subscription.

my pc has been fine with a free virus scanner for the last 12 months (and longer too), and I didn't pay a penny, and more importantly it runs a lot faster than it would do with mcafee and doesn't continually call home.

You can't really judge how good a virus scanner is, until you try some alternatives and research detection rates. It could have been fine with no virus scanner because you didn't hit a virus. It's a myth that the paid ones are better or necessary, so techie forums will always tend give advice on free/bettter alternatives, especially on a money saving site. Even if we are talking to the hand, someone else might take notice, save themselves some money, and enjoy a much more reponsive machine.

No the McAfee 'bubble' is telling me that the it 'runs out soon' or words to that affect.

That's I wanted to be armed with other, possibly more reasonable, prices when I start the renewal process.

    Appreciate the constructive response.

Why are you asking how to buy one of the worst virus protectors on the market then?

Why are taking the time to reply to a question in such a confrontational manner?

    Estate agents eh? Pfft

So, once you've checked that it is not going to auto-renew, you can purchase their suite here for £8.09(3 computers).

Up to you, as they say.

    Great stuff - appreciate this.

    Thank you

Come on, the OP is happy with it. What they're asking (regardless of the software itself) is;l Is it cheaper to nenew through the program itself, or just outright buy a new subscription.

OP needs to go back home, and look at the package, check online the equivalent package and actually work out the costs. Also see if your bank offers you anything for free/reduction. They do seem to do it randomly (prolly check online in banking I guess)

That all said.... Go to Avast.com and buy from there! ;)

    Sound advice - much appreciated

The latest PC Pro magazine has an article on AV protection. Their labs winner in the paid for sector cost £19 but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. :o

In the free sector AVG comes out on top.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

It was Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2012, at £19 plus VAT.

"Sadly, McAfee's performance in our malware tests was dire." PC Pro, May 2012 (issue 211), p 141.

And, when compared with other AV packages over the last six years, "At the other end of the scale, McAfee's consistently weak results indicate its last-place showing is no mere blip." (p144)
