Fuel strikes

Do I want all that alcohol consumed by a hoard of shoppers doing a daily run?
No, I want them all at home, not drinking and driving.
So stock up the trolleys, enjoy yourself, and don't drive.
You've got freezers, you don't need to go out for the best part of a week.), so your reasoning doesn't entirely apply here.
I think people should just stop eating and drinking for a while, and get off their butts and walk. It would certainly save money and contribute to attenuating the obesity crisis the UK is heading for.

Can you get the train? I'm going to see my Mum this weekend with the children and I was going to drive. I have a full tank of fuel, but I can't risk using it all and then not being able to get to work next week. I booked tickets last night for trains tomorrow and got reserved seats no problem. And actually, it's only £10 more expensive (£75 v £65 fuel) and that is on an ordinary off peak ticket, not an Apex or anything.0

Get the violin out guys...........
I've got a drive of 8 counties this weekend for a jolly with the kids and horses, I'm fuelled and ready to go!0 -

Who mentioned striking?
Taking a ballot on strike action is a form of industrial action. A vote in favour shows resolve to fight and gives the union a bargaining tool, a vote against shows that the union might as well pack in a go home.
I don't think it's the government that's hell bent on panic. I think it's the media, all the govt. are doing is responding to the media led circus going around and shoving a camera in the face of anyone they can find.
Daft remarks made by politicians shouldn't surprise anyone.
Oddly enough I see very little signs of panic, I filled up my jerry can* this morning at Tesco. There was only one car in front of me, same at the other pumps too, I've seen it a lot busier at weekends.
I work from home so I usually only fill it up once a month.

Why would you not get to work next week? Most of the idiots will have full tanks before the weekend. Normal service will be resumed next week.
The best part of all this nonsense to me is that the tanker drivers have already got what they need without even having to go on strike. We've just had an instant demonstration of the havoc it would wreak along with the govts reaction and not one single tanker has stopped the wheels turning. Its one hell of a bargaining chip.0 -

Absolutely spot on!
Which is, I suspect, exactly why Unite balloted the drivers. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I've got to cross two counties this weekend to visit friends!
Anyone got tips for dealing with the fuel strike?
Yes I have one but you won't like it because in this country it's a sin:
Take the TRAIN and a bicycle. You could even use a bus at the other end if you're too lazy to cycle. Believe it or not, people actually do this all over the country and even in London of all places! Terrible isn't it
Seriously, while I love my car, I grew up using the trains and I'd more than happily jump on one any time. I love the things to bits and always feel very comforted being on a train for some reason. The shops are shut for one day of the year, ( and not even every shop, depending on your religion, ) but people still buy thousands of loaves of bread and pints of milk. To what purpose?
No idea but me and my partner don't understand it either. Bread you can live without and the same goes for milk. Granted I can sort of understand milk as people like it in their tea / coffee but even so you can buy dried milk and use that or even buy long life UHT milk and keep that in storage. Bread I don't understand. Now I personally eat a lot of bread but even over XMas or snowy periods I don't go out panicking to buy the stuff like other people do. It's absurd!
I'll survive off tins of beans, soup and anything else that can be stored for long periods. I think the bread and milk thing is a tradition that people used to panic buy in years gone by as it was a basic / important part of a food supply in the 50's and 60's and as a nation its been passed down to us even though there is plenty of other food around people still panic and head for thebread and milk. Thats my theory anyway.0 -
I think the government has played a binder here.
Everyones tanks will be full, the fuel storage capacity of the country will have doubled within a week (ie in folks tanks) the panic will have all subsided by the time these guys decide to go on strike.
So with luck the effect of any strike will be minimal.
If you want to blame anyone blame the media, they are loving it.0 -
Go to one of the many petrol stations that don't have cues.
Sorry couldn't resist that0
