I don't personally think that it's a bad part of Lordswood at all. If it were nearer Kestrel Lane then I'd have more concerns (only because you get children hanging about at the weekends round the pubs and bowling alley).

We looked at a couple of houses down Lords Wood Lane and I thought they were quite nice. I live in ME5 but not Lordswood (Walderslade) and we have never had any problems with crime etc.

You can look up the area on upmystreet.com for more information.

I never go shopping in Chatham as Hempstead Valley and Bluewater are so easy and parking is free etc. so don't ever have any need to go to the town centre. It's pretty hideous these days, but so are many town crntres in the area (Gravesend, Dartford, Gillingham etc).

I also tend to go to pubs further out in the villages nearby as they are more intimate.

You are also easy driving distance to Walderslade Village which has a fair few takeaways and a large CoOp/lirary/HSBC bank etc.

What types of services are you interested in? Schools (Primary or secondary)? Transport? Churches? Out of interest, are you from outside the general area?

If you are going to London from Chatham then in the mornings you have the fast trains non stop to London Bridge/Cannon Street for the city (takes about 45 minutes) or the slow trains to London Bridge/Charing Cross (about 1 1/4 hours) or for West London from Chatham you can go fast to Victoria (again about 45 minutes). Trains are generally about three per hour for each route in the mornings.

When I used to commute to London the monthly railcard to London (without tube) was £206 (£235 with tube) but that was five years ago so prices have probaby changed a bit now.

You are also one junction down the M2 from Cuxton where there is a large Cinema complex with restaurants (Chiquitos/Frankie & Bennys etc.)

Obviously you are also about 1/2 hour from Bluewater which has lots of nice restaurants etc.

Rochester is also quite quaint as is Cobham and lots of the surrounding villages.

If you really want to know what a street is like, then you should visit at different times of the day and week (eg. Saturday night/school day mornings).

Lordswood Leisure Centre is nearby. It has a gym etc, but no pool.

tbh, I think the neighbours are going to be biggest influence, although it it's a detached house, then the influence is limited I guess.

I think you get god and bad areas wherever you go. Personally I've lived in Chatham for the past twelve years and have been very happy here. If I thought it was a bad area, then I certainly wouldn't be raising my family here.

You are also right next to Bluebell Hill which is reportedly the most haunted place in Britain ;)

For days out etc there is Aylesford nearby with it's lovely pubs and coffee shop and the Aylesford Friary is lovely. Leeds Castle is also close as is the museum of Kent Life on the river next to a Beafeater pub.

Supermarket wise you have a large Asda about 5 minute drive or a Morrisons about 2 minutes away. The nearest large Tesco is on the way to Gillingham.

Hempstead Valley is a small shopping centre but it's not far from you. On the way you pass Elm Court centre which has a large garden centre and pine shops etc. You are also near Capstone Park which has a small lake for fishing /ducks etc.

Maidstone (just down the A229) also has a lot of facilities and is good for shopping if you prefer town centre shopping.

  • I've had 2 houses in Lordswood. I think it's OK. If you need to get to London, there is an excellent coach service (Kings Ferry) or if you want the train, I used to drive to Sole Street. It's a bit further but easier to get to than chatham

I lived in Lordswood for 19 years and only moved away last year. Our area had a problem with yobs from the local council estate but that was because there was somewhere for them to congregate. The residents made a huge fuss and the police and local MP got involved and Ive heard its very quiet there now on our old road. They never seem to bother anyone who minds their own business. The main problem with youths is Lordswood Lane near the Kestrel shops. I think everywhere else is ok and it is a good area to live in as mrcow and others have said because its so convenient to everything. I would add that the fish and chip shop on Lordswood Lane is excellent and youre in a good position to get to all the local grammar schools and high schools. The health centre in Lordswood has just been rebuilt and its excellent. Sometimes bus shelters get broken along Lordswood Lane. If you have £300k there are some very nice houses in Rochester but there again you have to be careful of the area or Hempstead, Wigmore, Strood, Rainham. Going back to Lordswood, also the gym is very handy. Chatham Pentagon Centre has just been bought by a large company and will be redeveloped. The whole centre is being renovated including the traffic system. Maidstone is a very nice town and you are also not very far away from Canterbury and the Kent coast which is absolutely lovely to explore. Whitstable is very nice to visit. There are two zoos, Port Lymphe and Howletts which are well worth a visit.

Right, Ive just had a look on the map to see where Cook Road is. That part of Lordswood Lane is the best part. Its quiet down there because the houses are more expensive. There are a lot of self builds down there. Some very nice houses. I would say that you will find that area very good. The place where its not so good is much further up near the shops. You are very handy for Morrisons there as well and the petrol station and Maundene school is an excellent primary school where my kids went before they went to private school. They went there because my daughter won a scholarship and not because we werent pleased with the school but that was a few years ago. I really like living in the Medway towns as there is so much here and its so convenient for everywhere. Incidentally every year we have a summer and winter Dickens festival in Rochester and a sweeps festival and its a great day out. There is Leeds castle near Maidstone and Cobtree Museum and the Kent County Show at Detling. I also like Bluewater; its my favourite day out. We have a new outlet centre in Chatham Dockside and theres a new cinema complex there as well as the one in Strood. I forgot about Chatham Dockyard. Thats a great day out too and a fascinating place to visit. As for Lordswood well I know a lot of people who have lived there for years so it cant be that bad.

Andthe dentist in Walderslade Village is so excellent that i have not changed although I have moved to a different area.
The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best

  • where is the council estate ??
  • still trying to find out about local shops etc.

suppose will have to travel down there nearer moving time, we in Essex at the mo so 1hr 20 mins drive

heard about youths on some estates, which sounds worrying, but then again get them every where.
