Did the same thing a while back Marks and Spencers chicken in bread crumbs, assumed it was cooked but was raw ,ate a whole fillet did not become ill ,felt fine but did put me off chicken for a time.

Thankyou for this posting, just goes to show im not alone then in my confusion/madness call it what you will (although daughter and hubby admit they thought they looked like a cooked product) . I certainly will be checking things more closely in future. Saying that though even though i have checked the label over and over its still not obvious that it has to be put in the oven to be cooked rather than just wanting it warmed.

If two healthy sane adults could make that mistake, so could someone vulnerable. I would write a strongly worded letter to Tesco HQ, with photos of the packaging.

Yes thats something i had thought about because like you say anyone could make the same mistake, like if elderly or fed to the young then it could turn into something a bit nasty for them.

Ive just taken some pics to show them and how easy it could be to think they are cooked, until you open one up in the light and see the centre.

Not sure if its ok to add a few pics here but here goes i want others opinions. Here are the bits straight out the packet, looks good enough to eat to me.

Here is a couple that look fine when opened up. Would you agree?

And then another thats not

But see how the above one still seems partially cooked from the outside in. Yes these are supposed to be raw and need cooking

So what do you think? Would you have assumed they were ready to eat? And what do you think about the product suposedly being raw and need cooking when you look at these pics?

Most of them looked cooked, apart from one. Yuk. Seems strange.

What does the packaging say with regards to cooking instruction?
  • That's weird - do you have pics of the packaging. In the last pic the one on the left is obviously raw but the one on the right looks cooked. What is the product called - can't find anything called "Tesco Crispy Chicken Breast Chunks" on Tescos site........

Heres the packaging which i have done from an angle so you can see the clear side panel with the chicken in it.

Im pleased you agree they looked cooked. I think i will take these back to the store and let them see for themselves.

It gives oven instructions 13-15 minutes, freezing guidelines and then oven from frozen instructions.

Ive just been looking at the odd few bits i have in the freezer of ready made food stuff and i think i know what it is now about how its confusing.
Other than the product looking ready to eat the packaging refers only to 'Oven', 'Freezing Guidelines' and 'Oven' from frozen. On all items i have at home already it makes a reference to 'Cook' somewhere in the guidelines of the oven. E.g. Oven Cook etc if you know what i mean. I only have frozen stuff which is like this and dont normally buy chilled items to know how they are worded.

Do you know the type of things i am on about though where you can if you want put them in the oven so you can have them how, i supposed chilled sausage rolls may have those instructions on them and perhaps quiche and so on. This is the type of food i thought this was.

I didnt even look to see if they needed cooking as to me they were not that kind of product (look or packaged). Even so, when i look at the instructions now it does not state they have to be cooked. It just says and i quote 'Oven Remove all packaging. Place on a baking tray in the centre of a pre-heated oven for 13-15 minutes.'

I think you'll be fine. The confusing thing is cos the batter is already half cooked. The product itself is probably pretty much but not 100% cooked - putting them in the oven would only bring them right up to temp. and just finish the last little bit off without overcooking them.

I don't think you're daft - it's a pretty easy mistake to make. I've found myself peering at packaging on occasion to see whether something can be eaten straight from packet or not.
