Being charged additional fee for Broadband in my area, options ??

I am moving house, previously my broadband with orange was £5 per month and £13.50 line rental in a package.
At my new house the total is £28.50 a month as they charge an additional £10 per month "to use BTs lines" apparently.
It therefore seems that any quote I get on the internet is nonsense.
Has anyone else encountered this and what is the best line rental and broadband option out there in this situation.
Currently considering £10.45 BT line rental with a broadband only package on top.

Sounds like you are on a Market 1 exchange meaning all services are supplied via BT. In a nutshell you are stuffed as you won't find much in the way of a cheap deal.
To confirm though, put your phone number into Samknows exchange search and check if their are any LLU operators. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Yeah definitely seems that way, I wasn't aware there were areas which aren't open to competition.
I've gone onto Samknows but can't work out to check for LLU operators in my area.
When I search for deals in my area everything comes up and I already know I can't get most of those deals.0 -
Use this link
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search
Enter your NEW phone number if you have it, and it will tell you what exchange you will be connected thru, and what services are available from it.
Failing that enter your NEW postcode.
There are a huge number of generally smaller exchanges in the UK which are Market 1 exchanges; these have only BT Wholesale as a supplier/reseller of services. If it is Market 1 I can recommend Plusnet offerings.0 -
Put your number in here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search then look on the left LLU suppliers will have a green tick beside them.0

i recently had a slightly similar thing, but not similiar if you know what i mean?
i transfered my broadband to a new provider, but orange forgot to tell me that my phone and broadband were one, so if i canceled or moved one, i had to do both. First i knew of this was when my broadband went dead, called my profivder and they told me. by now it was too late for them to transfer my phone line over, but they couldnt offer me a new phone line on one of their deals, as my local exchange was full, and the only option was to go to one of their packages that hires the line and equipment from bt, which added about a tenner a month onto my bill.... so i simply went to bt for my phone line, paying £2.46 a month more, but still got my cheap broadband so not too bad0 -

I am in that situation. I am on a 900 user exchange. No LLU operator in their right mind will come near it on those figures. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Samknows says there is one other LLU which is TalkTalk.
Can I assume they will be the cheapest alternative then or are there ever non LLU suppliers which will offer a competitive deal.
Someone mentioned plusnet, is it worth speaking to them as well or just a waste of time to speak to non LLU providers.
Thanks0 -
One other LLU provider than who?
Look at the market classification for the exchange under the samknows LLU data. If it's a Market 2 exchange (which it should be) then you can get the Plusnet cheap rate, starting at £6.49 for the Plusnet Value tariff. Or just put your number into the Plusnet number checker and it will tell you-you don't need to call them to get this info.
Otherwise TT will be the only cheap option I'm afraid.
Personally I'd go with Plusnet (if M2) every time.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Samknows is not always right!
My exchange is showing as Market 1 even though Talktalk were installed at the end of last year.
I read somewhere that it takes time for an upgrade to show and thought that would effect my options because my contract with BT is ending in a couple of months.
I have just checked with Plusnet as macman advised above and I can get the cheap packages so don't always trust Samknows!0 -

As a matter of interest - how did you find out that TalkTalk had "LLU'd" your exchange ?? You say Samknows is not always up to date but I'm not aware of another trustworthy source of that sort of info (certainly not TalkTalk sales!!)0
