That's because Osborne is a cock. HTH"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Is he going to have a sliding scale of VAT rates to correspond with the pasties gradually cooling from hot out of the oven, through warm and tepid, to cold?

If Labour were still in power we'd probably be buying hot pasties with wheelbarrows full of hyperinflated currency by now.
The current lot make mistakes but Labour were a disaster, never forget.0 -
There'll be threads galore on Greggs if this goes ahead! Imagine the complaints at people paying an extra 20p to find their pasty just isn't warm enough. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

There has been VAT on hot food for years. However, Greggs found a loophole in the existing rules.
If a shop re-heats a cold pasty, they have to charge VAT on it. So Greggs put uncooked pasties in their ovens, and sold them as fresh out of the oven. The fact that they were still warm was just a sign of how freshly baked they were, and wasn't because they were selling hot food.
The chancellor has just decided to close this loophole. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

Go ask your local chip shop why they should have to charge VAT on a pie or pasty when the national bakery chain or supermarket (possibly next door to them) doesn't.
I'm sure they'll be pleased to explain why they think it's a loophole long overdue to be closed.0 -
So becaused it's hot I have to pay vat?
Ok, so I go to Greggs and buy a hot pasty and pay vat on it.
But by the time I get home to eat it, it has gone cold. So can I then claim the vat back?0 -

Not to be a killjoy, but when you bought it, it was hot food. If you let it go cold that's your own fault, in fact I think they should charge you personally VAT twice because you will be re-heating it again when you get home! :rotfl:A smile costs nothing, but gives a lot.It enriches those who receive it without making poorer those who give it.A smile takes only a moment, but the memory of it can last forever.0 -

You have it to eat it cold at home because you can't afford to put petrol in your car so have to walk and you can't afford the gas or electric to put the cooker on.
At least you can wrap yourself in the bag to try to keep warmIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -

!!!!!!.
let's hope not, because you'll be paying full whack in greggs as they claim everything is hot (or 'just out of the oven' for vat purposes), even when it's clearly nothelpful tips
it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)0
