Drive4fun @ Faro airport now give you the option of renting a transponder for €20 including €15 of credit and there is an option to add more credit to the transponder upon collection or during the rental.

Such a shame that the Portuguese government didn't go the whole hog and have toll booths, the general opinion appears to be that tourists are happy to pay the tolls, they just want the ease of paying for them and the government appear to have gone out of their way to ensure payment of tolls is as difficult and complicated as possible.

Totally agree. We used the toll road in Spain last year and it was so easy paying at the toll booths. It was probably more expensive but simply paying 4 or 5 euros at each booth was so convenient.

This year we will be hiring a car from Faro airport and it is clearly going to be a lot more hassle.

I just got back from Portugal, I used Drive4fun after reading about them on here. They also turned out to be the cheapest, and have no excess on their insurance, so we paid 100euros for 4 days, other companies I checked were charging around 100-130 PLUS more to bring the excess down.

We paid 20euros and got the transponder. Id definitely recommend using them.

What would happen if these toll fees were not paid on return to the UK?

I have read the website which reads...

Failure to pay toll fees is a misdemeanour subject to a fine for all users, both domestic and foreign. The fine is 10 times the rate of toll, with a minimum of 25 euros and a maximum of 125 euros.

But can they really fine you?

Could they (or are they likely to) take you to court either in the UK or portugal?

Please try it and let us know :D
  • We hired a car at Faro airport back in May 2012 for our onward journey to Lagos, and when we picked-up the car the Rental company told us to ignore the tolls on the A22 as the Portuguese government was being challenged in the European Courts about the tolls, as the road was built with EU funding and it was a stipulation of this funding that the road would remain toll-free. However, we note that things have moved on since then, and the Portuguese courts have ruled it as lawful to charge the tolls, but even this is being challenged.

Going back in October, so we'll see if the Rental company have changed their stance.

One word of warning, if you do use the A22 .... don't rely on the Petrol stations being open as they have been laying-off staff as no one is using the A22.
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

Just to report back. I was in Portugal this year and returned back on the 27th August.

I hired a car from Luzcar and used the A22 for 3 journeys. I checked online by entering the car reg which showed a balance owed (i cant remember the exact amount but was around the 20euro mark)

I had no way of paying these tolls before my return and there was no way to make an online payment.

To date i have not heard anything from them regarding payment
