OK, OH doesn't want to risk having to pay someone elses toll, in case they decided to spend the whole day driving up and down the A22 for fun. We're going to cancel our booking and rebook with Avis.

Will post back here in June to say how it went.
Trying to remain free of unsecured debt and build up some savings.

Have done CeFA and CeMAP exams but no longer regulated.

    Hi,

We were there in Feb 2012, and paid the tolls at post office @ Faro airport as we were departing. We overheard people talking about unpaid charges whilst waiting for their hire cars. If you have not already thought about it...take a SAT NAV with you (if you have one)... we found it v. useful. We used the toll road getting to our destination in Luz because of travelling late, and we avoided the toll roads as much as we could, and used an alternative route on our way back (which was fine) Have a great time.

Just returned from Spain/Portugal had a hire car from Faro airport, I always book with Drive4Fun and they have transponders ready to go for your vehicle, if you wish. The cost is Euros20, and this includes Euros15 towards toll fees.

If you work out, prior to arrival, the maximum cost of tolls you may be looking to incur, and if it's over the Euros15, you can give Drive4Fun the money and they will add that to the transponder, at least this way you don't need to be uploading extra funds during your holiday.

Downside being that if you don't use all the funds on the transponder there is NO refund. You have to pay cash for the transponder. DO NOT forget to remove the transponder from the car when parking up/overnight etc., as I've heard tell of cars being broken into for the transponder, although each transponder is linked to the car registration number.

I have booked a car with www.luzcar.com at faro airport (i use them every year and are excellant, no deposit reqired, no fuel deposit, and can pay cash)

I emailed them regarding these new tolls and got the following reply...

    Tolls

1 - Whencrossing, the vehicle will be registered by the tolls in the system.

2 - The tolls have different prices, but the price for kilometer in A.22is 9 cents.
    (Ex: Route Vila Real de Santo Ant!nio - "Lagos - € 11.60)

3-there are 2 companies that recieve thepayment ( National post office, and payshop shops)

4- the bill will only be online after 48 hours of the passage and will onlystay for 72hours to be payed.

5-The companies that recieve the money cannot see wich where the passages that the car had, meaning that a car that isused by two persons on the same day they can not split the bills.

6-In case of a customer driving on the A22on the last day of is vacation, becauseas it only comes online after 2 days, they can not pay the last passage.

7 - This use and the cost can not be payed to us as rent a car company, soafter some time we will be notified and required by law to provideidentification of the user / driver of the vehicle.

8 -The customer will be notified (with no fine) at his address for payment ofuses and / or passages in A.22
Although opposed to this measure, we hope to have helped you, our best wishes

Just returned from a very hot and sunny Algarve.
Before going I was very concerned about the confusion around the paying of the tolls on the A22, but also the bad safety reputation of the N125.
We had our hire car through Airauto - booked online.
They asked where we were staying and then asked if we knew about the new toll system on the A22. We told them we weren't planning to use the A22.
There were leaflets explaining the tolls and how to pay at the car hire pick-up desk and also in the hire car itself. I overheard the staff explaining to other customers all about the tolls. They seemed to be helpful and spoke good English.
In the end we only used the N125 - took our time - (we accepted that our journey time to and from Luz would be double), found the traffic levels not too busy, and thankfully had no problems.
However, what it will be like in the peak season I can't say.
