oh yes, I was told about this site by my friend and it is fab. https://www.babymattressesonline.co.uk
There is a choice of loads of different mattress types starting from about 20 pounds up to about a hundred, but the best thing is that they will make them made to measure at no extra cost. Also, all of the mattresses are up to the British standards re safety, flammability etc etc. We picked up our baby's one at the bargain price of 39.99 including delivery, and it's nice and thick as well. He has never slept better. Hope that helps!

  • Hello there everybody :)

I am having a baby (11 weeks gone) and sadly my OH has left me "he isn't ready for fatherhood @ 28".
So I am to be a single mum. I am very upset about it but I will manage, I have to manage...thousands of other mummies do.
Money will be incredibly tight and there seems to be so much to buy for bubs. What I really need to know off you lovely people is what things will I really need and what other things can I do without/are just a gimmick/waste of money?
I intend to breast feed and hopefully to purchase some reuseable nappies by the time bubs is here. Other than that I am not sure what else, it's my first baby and I am a bit lost.

    Thank you all in advance

  • Hey Hun

Sorry I cant be much help but I just wanted to send you a big hug and hope that you get all the help you need on here :)

Good luck to you and the wee one
  • Awww thank you Rachel. x x Feeling a bit down today, so I am trying to take my mind off things and be practical by organising ahead for baby.
I keep having very conflicting motions of being excited and optimistic one minute and then teary and sad the next. I am playing really upbeat tunes at the minute...I am forcing myself to be okay.
I also have Holby City to watch on video later...looking forward to that lol.

  • I have to confess to not needing to do everything OS when our daughter arrived last year, BUT, I can give advice on what we did and didn't use.

    We did avoid gadgets so...

Don't get a monitor with a video on it. Get the basic monitor so you can hear the baby. We had the video one and spent all our time staring at it to see if she was moving... then running upstairs to check, and waking her up. Bad move!

You don't need table corner protectors, but you will probably need plug socket protectors eventually (IKEA are by far the cheapest and sell them in biggest bags)

Muslins are essential. Buy in bulk. Cheaper and you will need millions of them!

Don't beat yourself up if you try BF and it doesn't work for you.. if you need formula, do shop around, there can be as much as 10p a carton difference on the ready made cartons and a £1 on the cartons of powder.

Start to collect small tupperware containers that can be microwaved. We weaned at exactly 17 weeks and 1 day and believe me, you need all the tupperware you can get to freeze your own delicious concoctions!

White babygrows/vests/socks/bootees etc are all cheapest in the supermarkets in multipacks. In my experience you get more growing room from a mr t babygrow than a primarni one.

Don't buy clothes for the first 6 months (unless you see a lovely outfit that you will put away and keep in the baby box for sentimental reasons!!) as everyone will buy them as gifts.

Ikea baby furniture is very good and cheap.

Don't go to Kiddicare if you live within driving distance, as you will want to buy the shop!

If anyone offers to buy you a pram, bite their hand off, ditto with the buggy.

I hope this is of some use.
  • I'm not sure you really need anything other than boobs and nappies.

a pack of baby gros and a few blankets.

Some sort of transport will be needed as the littl'un gets bigger -pushchair/pram. To start with a sling or baby carrier is uesful.

If you intend to go anywhere in a car with the babe then a car seat is essential and a legal requirement. Try and get one that will span as long an age range as possible.

Best of luck, so sorry to hear the child's dad has turned out to be a child too.
  • Ahhhh duck once the little one comes i'm sure it'll be fantastic

My mam used to used to use reusable nappies for me for when i was round the house
